hiya, may I ask a question? in tough times?

house insurance is due... if I get the usual house and contents with emergency cover on both it is £240
If I miss off the emergency cover it is about £150 for house and contains.

Now there is 3 full time working adults and little old me on a very part time job.I have very little money but a little savings.

I have asked all to help pay the bill.
Adult child 1 gave me £5 in 20p's I could count out and have...
Adult child 2 have given my £10 as overpaid for something owed to me and I said the extra was going towards the bill.
Both adult kids give £100 house keeping a month to oh
Oh says he will have to pay another bill... but I feel he is paying most of the household bills.

Myself I am giving the £42 I got or working an extra day and £30 I won in a prize draw.

    So £87 towards the bill.
Should I try to find the rest from my savings for the £240 bill.
Have a cheaper bill by taking of the emergency cover?
Ask oh to pay towards the bill?

It is so hard to decide what to do. I feel adult children could, but will not pay more... when you see new clothes or xbox games bought....

    What should I do?

Well this is easy for me to say because I am not you :p but if all the stuff that is being covered is X boxes that aren't yours, and clothes that aren't yours....I'd be sorely tempted to split the bill four ways and ask the kids for a realistic amount, a quarter each ? - a fiver in 20p's is a bit on the low side I think....

I feel you pain though, because when DD was here after we rescued her from the house from hell, she offered me nothing, I had to ask, got given a very small amount, and watched her go shopping

  • Quick update while my lunch is settling...prawn salad with home made gluten free brown bread and two home made almond biscuits and huge mug of tea...perfect.

The expected storms have not arrived yet thank goodness but its very stormy looking with high winds that actually feel hot. It's like standing in front of a hair dryer and does not feel right at all. However, it might just dry all my washing so I am not complaining about it. It just feels very strange to be so warm at this time of year.Anyway, I am glad of the hot wind and I have another wash load in as well as the one on the line.

Decided against going to the gym today and sorted out our car and scooter tax this morning. You had to go online, wait for the auto translate, put your details in on the tax site then print out your tax payment form . Two separate ones, one for the car and one for the 150cc scooter (the 50cc is tax free). We managed to do it and went to pay, apparently you will get no tax sticker for the car this year, you have to carry the stamped form in the car with you and they can also check it online if the police stop you. We paid both, got it stamped then realised they are not due to be paid till the end of December, for next year. They must be desperate for the money if they want us to pay now....

We were considering going away for a few days to the Northern mainland as a treat over Christmas. There are some reasonable prices for hotels on the internet but we realised we daren't risk going on the bus then getting stuck if they go on strike. There is no way of knowing if they will strike till the day before they do it. We were going to take the bus instead of the car in case the very mountainous roads are ice/snow bound.

So we have decided to get some snow chains and take the car. We will choose a hotel when we get there as we have no way of knowing if the ferries will be on strike either. That way, we can have emergency supplies in the car and if necessary can come home again. I have never known travel here be so flaming complicated! Some of the hotels charge full price if you have to cancel, even if it's because of strikes you have no control over.

I will also have to take some emergency food with me in case I can't get any gluten free options on my travels and for breakfast at the hotel. A ''continental'' breakfast is no good for me at all. We are trying to find a hotel with traditional food for dinner as we don't know if any of the restaurants will be open on Christmas eve and Christmas day.

Just hoping we can get it all sorted out and go and enjoy ourselves.

Have quite a spate of house break ins and robberies being reported locally. Reviewing our house security and have installed alarms that work on mains and battery. Sad that it is now necessary to do this when just a couple of years ago it was safe to leave your doors and windows open!

I have also heard of a couple of personal attacks on locals here on the island....just glad I kept up with my self defense and kickboxing.

Thanks for your feedback. I am going to stop posting on the Preparing for winter thread and will put the forecasts on here and on the SHTF thread as I know some people are on one and not the other.

Here is a link to one I have just seen and I must say my friends who predict the weather are backing it up. I now have access to images from the European computer model for weather which has been so accurate lately I am gobsmacked!...its a map forecast for 7th December and shows the UK in a bit of a deep freeze (-8) during the daytime on that date. I will update as we get nearer of course.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2239556/UK-weather-forecast-Britain-faces-coldest-winter-100-years-Big-Freeze-follows-flood.html

How about you just start a weather forecast thread rather than duplicating posts over several threads, that way people who want to know the forecast above and beyond what the Met Office give us can read the thread?

Then perhaps people can post what the actual weather is in their area instead of forecasts.

Chilly but sunny here in Fife today.

What is the Adult children's spending? I mean do they go out a fair bit? o they treat themselves to items much? Are they really struggling? Is £5 in 20p a true reflection of the situation they themselves are in?

I guess it's about whether your adult children are putting on to you as to what decision you come to. It is tricky. When we were in a lot worse position than we are now we took accidental cover off. Money can only reach so far.

Very quick and unthoughtout response to Good advice.

I would take out the larger insurance for the most cover if at all possible and then explain to the children that unless they coughed up a fair share of the bill their possessions would be excluded from the cover. So if the Xbox etc was stolen or damaged it would be their hard luck. £100 a month for their keep????? You are kidding.

I read something like this somewhere.

    Kids!
Living with unreasonable and demanding parents?
    Show them who's boss.
    Move out!
Play your music as loud as you like.
    Party every night.
    Eat what you fancy.
Wash up when you feel like it.
    Pay your own bills.

I have the same in my house. SS feels he's hard done by as he 'only' has £650 to spend a month after paying for his car and his dig money. I haven't found the magic answer yet short of him leaving.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

` However for the very end of the month ie 29-30th it seems the High will not be moving fast enough East to let milder air return, from South, as we had expected. Ireland will however be less cold relative to normals than NE England and it will probably be less cold at end Nov/start Dec over Brit+Ire than had been suggested by standard models on 26th. THE DEC 30d forecast update will take these observations into account.`

good advice - I think you need to look at what each adult actually costs - XBOXs etc use more electricity, food, washing all together and then also consider what they are earning. £100 a month keep seems incredibly low - I paid that to my mum some twenty years ago when working a part time job. As a rough guess I would say that full time NMW at £6 an hour would surely leave an adult with at least £130 after tax etc, I dont think its unreasonable to expect £60 of that as keep per week.

Maybe for each £50 they earn over NMW increase the amount by £15 or 30% ?
I know its hard but they really need to learn to pay their own way, you could then if you had money over each month begin a small savings fund and if they move out you could choose to give them some money towards a deposit.

2tonsils I like the weather forecasts from both you and kittie, I dont have huge amounts of time and rarely leave this thread to visit other parts of MSE, being prepared for the weather is key part to surviving these tough times.
I remember being almost flooded a few years ago and we were fortunate that I had prepared, the warning hit and I was able to get OH and a few of his friends to move all the important stuff to the upstairs. Thankfully it was a false alarm but the advance knowledge meant we were ready.

Oh dear, I counted my chickens when I said we did not have the storms....we are now under a dangerous weather warning for the storms and force 8/9 winds and it is going to hit us first. It has gone black and some of the island already has power losses. Off to unplug all my electrics except the freezers. Have a great evening folks. Hope to back on later or tomorrow although the dangerous storms are due to last three days at least for us. It's still 26 degrees outside in the high winds! Freaky!
