a block of 'Baking fat' is nearly half the price of a block of butter. What is the difference?
fuddle - baking fat is just solid marg. You use it for cakes or biscuits that you need to keep their shape better, IYSWIM.
I make Delia's mincemeat and if I don't make lots of mince pies she has a recipe for a mincemeat cake for some other time. Here's the recipe
    http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cuisine/european/english/home-made-christmas-mincemeat.html
I make little tarts and put icing and a half cherry on top, or a small star on top and spray with edible glitter.

Our DD won't eat anything with fruit in. She says that cake and fruit are different things and shouldn't be baked together! She's wrong of course!
Hope everyone is safe and dry.

jem - hope your feeling soon (hugs)

my OH and children can't stand mince pies, Christmas cake or Christmas puddings.
Last year we made weezls chocolate yule log and lemon and ginger cheesecake. Both were moreish, oh and a coffee and walnut cake.
Yes completely over the top but it lasted all christmas and new year. I took some to my family and it instantly disappeared. So i just get a pack of mince pies for my dad and me to share.

Well we went and saw the house today and we were both impressed. Double garage but no gardens, three bedrooms and upstairs bathroom and downstairs toilet.
Bad points: upstairs needed redoing and it had no bath only a walk in shower.
    No garden :(

Good points it seems to be a quiet area and it has a large kitchen/dining room. so plus points all round.
Other thing is the rent is higher than what we pay now.

So yes its looking good so far :)

Right im to bed as im shattered

    night all x

    Hi Jem
Re what to put by a name on your phone to ring in an emergency: the usual one, I think, is ICE (In Case of Emergency)

He did get his MRI appointment through though....23rd December.....a Sunday!?! I was quite shocked.

My last MRI was on a Sunday too. I think they have to justify the cost of the machine itself. There was no one about though so no waiting and parking very easy x
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Ive just been sitting having a cuppa tea and watching the news, all doom and gloom........

On to the floods , not good at all that people are suffering really badly in a crisis like this, why oh why , whena disaster happens to another country we have phone numbers put on our tvs at every opportunity asking us to donate money, and yes we do it.......Millions get donated because we feel sorry for them...............

Yet if we have disasters over here theres no mention of starting up a donation bank, why dont we look after our own first?.......However tight things are at the moment in the UK, I would definately put something towards helping these poor people who now are unable to live in their own homes, its one of the worst things that can happen to families is to lose their homes to floods or fires...........

Sorry to have a early morning rant , but we should be looking after our own first..........Charity begins at home....Sheila

Hubby also had his MRI can at 7.30 of a friday evening, simply because they cannot get all the scans done in a day, too many people need scans and they are a very expensive piece of equipment, we did ask the nurse when we had our late appointment scan, in any case at least you can park at the hospital that time of night and plus theres not many people about.......Sheila...

Jem:- Yes the cake is right. You use ICE as the contacts name and put in your number. I think it became well used after 9/11 and 7/7. We certainly have it in our phones and the emergency services are told to look for it so that close relatives can be easily contacted.
Sorry that you are still poorly, I hope your feeling a bit better soon. :grouphug:

Oh Jem, so sorry, hope you feel better soon. It is horrid (and I speak from experience) waiting for tests to be done, waiting for results, feeling rotten while you wait.:grouphug::grouphug:

The phone thing is ICE (In Case of Emergency).

MOAN ALERT..... so fed up I could scream. Got up yesterday to find some thieving little !!!!!!! (insert your own choice of swear word) had stolen the catalytic converter off our car which was parked on our drive, leaving us with a repair bill of £400. If we claim off our insurance there is a £200 excess and we know from bitter experience that although we have protected no claims, this won't stop them hiking the premium next year.

I'm physically struggling too and stress makes me worse. I know I don't help myself because at times like this I eat. EAT. EAT!!! Then not only do I hate myself I feel physically worse. I really need to lose weight and when I get to the weight I am now my skin gets sore, my joints and muscles ache and I don't want to move off the sofa, which in turn makes me feel even worse.

Woke up in a "what is the point?" mood today. My family works damned hard, we have had the year from hell with illness, family stuff and money, and now some useless lowlife has just put the icing on the cake (bad choice of words as I like cake and icing, but too angry to make brain find the right sentence)

Ah well, at least the floods are 2 streets away. My heart goes out to all those affected. After all if you are living financially on the edge, the loss of your car, belongings, even your home, albeit temporarily, could just send you over the edge. Living on minimum wage with no way to get to your job,no clothes to wear and no home as your base would be impossible. Even if insured, it takes time for them to assess and pay out, so how do people manage? It is just horrible.
