Well at last the torrential rain has stopped here..in fact it's been beautiful and sunny and 25 degrees! Last night was a nightmare...we had a storm at 4pm yesterday and it bucketed down...and since our water tank (filtered rain water) under the house was full it could not keep up with the excessive flow of water and started coming up through the tiles near the old marble steps....so emergency bail outs were the order of the day. It was easy to clean up as (thank God) we have no carpets only tiles downstairs. It also came through the hairline gap in the glass panels on the upstairs passageway (also tiled). I have never seen rain like it even though we get very heavy rain in the winter. At one point I am sure it was coming down sideways!

No damage done, the floors are now bone dry thanks to the dehumidifiers that are on both upstairs and downstairs. We had the pump on to empty some of the water out of the tank last night and it seems to have done the job. It has two overflow pipes but they couldn't keep up with the amount of water this time. It's the first time its ever happened, and hopefully the last.

Went to the gym this morning and had a really good workout and it was full of friendly people which was nice. First day of the primal eating and I have enjoyed it. Hopefully I will keep it up till Christmas then have a short break from it. I never overindulge at Christmas as most stuff has gluten in and I cant have it.

My OH suggested having a few days away over Christmas and mentioned my favourite spot on the mainland....so hopefully we might just go. It depends on the weather as its way up in the mountains in Northern Greece. Other choice was a short cruise but there seems to be nothing available from here. Flights to the UK to go on a cruise are way too expensive to afford. I will be very happy with a trip to the mainland.

Just cleaned all the downstairs of the house. I am getting yearnings to make it cosy...so all excess 'gadgets' have been put away (they are his not mine- what is this thing with men and gadgets?????) and I have candles burning, the log fire lit and the aromatherapy burner on in the corner. It looks snug and lovely and cosy.

I am home alone tonight so going to indulge myself in reading my Kobo in front of the fire. Bliss....

Thank you unixgirl. They would be perfect actually, because the girls wouldn't have to faff about when they got to school. Anyone seen high vis for dogs?

Also do your dogs have coats? DH won't let me get Alfie a coat, saying he'd look stupid and that he's designed to withstand the wet and cold. I know he has a lot of under fur as it's forever coming out when I brush him but is it enough?

My waterproof has been sprayed with tent proofer. It actually mentioned goretex on the back so I think it'll be fine on mine. It's Nike ACG and was bought to do the job two years ago but I guess It's in need of reproofing? Do you have to keep topping the waterproofing up?

I've sourced the Nikwax Lyn. I'll do the girls' in that when I wash them. Thank you. When I move I won't be too far from GoOutdoors so that will be really handy

I HAVE actually seen Hi Viz for dogs....both coats and leads/collars, but you can also buy reflective strip which can be sewn onto their coats. Try local haberdashery.

My dogs have several coats. In fact one won't go out without her coat from about the end of october until the sun reappears. It does stop them getting soggy from above, but underneath is still a mud encrusted joy.

Being a bit out of action, my neighbour just very kindly took one of the dogs for a romp around her field (the other wouldn't leave mum) she came back with a tide line, beneath which she was filthy :) Note to self - white dogs not good in the country.

All our dogs have coats (my Mum makes them), to me no matter how thick their coats are (majority are Huskies who thanks to me 'pampering' them, hate the snow!) there's nothing worse that a wet dog. They're miserable, and you're miserable due to the smell (no matter how clean their coat is all dogs have that wet dog smell..... I still love them to bits though).

  • WonderCollie has a blue gortex type coat and his winter Muttluks for all four paws. He's fine with his boots, when it's -35 it's too cold for your pads to hit the ice, so he kinda understands it's the only way he can go for a walk in January!

He's got the undercoat, as did our previous Elkhounds. The Elkies had boots as well. They would run around and play outside until it was around -22. Then you couldn't get them off the couch.

It's amazing how long a dog can hold it's bladder when it's really cold outside.

Years ago (late 90's) my then aging Alsatian just couldn't go outside when it was that really bad winter. I ended up going getting her puppy pads. The first time she used it she thought I was going to give her into trouble, bless.

  • Docky has a coat - the only problem is he will not move one paw when he's wearing it!!!! only when removed will he take us for walkies, no matter how wet, no matter how cold - Coat = Brakes on for Lurchers!!!

FUDDLE - Thanks for asking pet, I'm fine, the antibiotics work really quickly and they have given me a weeks worth of a different one from my surgery so I will hopefully not need to go back for any more. Take care of your back though, nice long soak in the bath and then stay warm with perhaps a hot water bottle on it and get someone to help lift tables with you tomorrow. Glad you have found the Nikwax, we've used it for years and it really does waterproof coats well, worth the outlay I think.

Hope all of you in the wet and flooded parts of the UK have had a better afternoon, we finally got some dry weather and sunshine this afternoon, but lots of the roads are very wet and puddly, we try to walk off road with Docky because motorists can't help but go through the puddles and you get very wet, even if they're going slowly. It looks like tomorrow will be a bit drier for most of us so perhaps the water levels will go down enough for you all to be able to get out and about again, let's hope so!!! Take care everyone, Cheers Lyn xxx.

  • Hi UNIXGIRL yes that is the Dockling, he's a little greyer now as that was taken a couple of years ago but he's still a goofy hairy scatty little lad, even at nearly 9. About as much fun as you can have with a doggie and still stay legal!!! We're really lucky to belong to him !!! Cheers Lyn xxx.

I had to sit in my car and take 3 paracetamol before I could drive off...........Bloody stress I expect...........................

So sorry you felt stressed and poorly but with my nurses cap on - you do know that you should never take more than 2 paracetamol every 4 hours and no more than 8 in any 24 hour period. Paracetamol for adults come in 500mg so only 1 g. Sorry to be pedantic but paracetamol appears so innocuous but is very dangerous if taken over the limit. Even odd doses here and there add up as the liver finds it very hard to process.
