If I lost my job today I would find a new job tomorrow even if it involved cleaning toilets. Its not hard. There are jobs out there.

Do it. Tomorrow is Friday, take it that come 6pm you are now unemployed. You have until 6pm the following day to secure a job.

    Retail is heavy work.

You said there are "jobs out there". Well where the hell are they? I have been trying for MONTHS and MONTHS, and I can't get a thing.

A little tip for you: just come to Merseyside and have a read of the Situations Vacant page. I guarantee, you will be STUNNED by the scant amount of jobs (if you can call them that) that are on offer.

You "can't" get a job. I am fed up hearing this excuse from people. If you want a job you will take anything there is going. I've worked in chip shops and petrol stations before when I was a student to make cash. They weren't the most amazing jobs but if you want money start looking harder. Don't expect to just wait for a job to fall in your lap.

There are still unemployed people in Aberdeen who through no fault of their own can't get a job. It's not always as easy as you make out. If you don't have the skills for the oil industry for instance.

Are there many office jobs in Aberdeen? If so, is the competition high for each vacancy? I have been contemplating moving there from jobless Merseyside, but first need to know what my chances would be of finding an admin job in Aberdeen. I would also need to know about finding suitable accommodation.

I would probably think most retail work has been filled for Christmas positions now. So probably won't be many jobs advertised now.

Have you considered working at cinemas, theatres. etc I worked at a cinema after uni, not the best job and it does involve working with some food, but you get to see films for free, which as a student is a bonus.

Also after uni if you want to work in the media industry, it's going to be even harder to find a job in the TV/film world than any part time retail job. Believe me, it took 1.5 years after finishing uni to get my break into TV. And it's only short term contracts, I'm currently unemployed after finishing my last job 2 weeks ago. If this frustrates you, TV job hunting is even more frustrating!

Aberdeen is a high cost place to live - if you are unwilling to share, how do you plan to finance this? Most of the work there is specialised, people are recruited from wide and far - without some experience in the industry, you are unlikely to be considered for any but the most basic of roles.

I agree, it is bad here.
It took my daughter 18 months to get a part time job to fit round college and she only managed to get a few hours at the Grand National but was lucky to get something else a few weeks later.
My eldest son was almost 2 years out of uni before he got a programming job, the only work he could get before that was doing nights at the sorting office for 24 days leading up to Christmas. He actually asked for the nights as they said it would give him a better chance.
My other son signed up for a few agencies but even then only got dribs and drabs of work including screwing tops on bottles of weedkiller and scraping mould of shoes. He hated it but kept on till he got a full time job in drainage, it's so disheatening for them getting rejection after rejection or more often than not just not hearing anything.
