Thanks for your reply. I just thought it was a bit coincidental at first, that's all.

Looking at my seller dashboard, everything seems to be fine - policy compliance is high, I've had no warnings about anything, there haven't been any low stars, no cases have been opened against me. Nothing immediately apparent is wrong that I can see.

If 4.7 is bad then I need to address that right away. Just out of interest, what is the very minimum to get through as standard? So I can be sure to stay well away from it.

4.6 will start getting ebay 'itchy' but even then you should retain standard rating.

The fact that your dashboard has no lows and no warnings is a puzzle though, I'd harrass ebay a bit and get an idea from them why they have marked you down with nothing obvious showing.

Re lulu's restriction on new listings - I'm assuming it's not just because, as a new member, you can only listed a few items per month?

I was pretty annoyed when I started selling again recently - I'd sold a fair bit in the past and never with any problems. But they treated me as "new" because it had been some time since I last sold anything and in the first month I could only list, I think it was 24, items.

Then I requested an upgrade and they put it up to 100 items per month, which is plenty for me. Recently they put it up again to 200 without me asking.

Apologies if I'm missing the point!

Will do, many thanks for the advice. I've emailed eBay, and if I don't get a response will try calling.

I can see why you'd think that :) but I've got a limit of 100 items, sent off for a code through the post, so that's not the reason behind it. Hopefully it will be resolved soon!

There was some discussion a while ago on the ebay buyer boards where buyers had been warned about misusing the system. When one phoned he was told that his 'habit' of leaving very low stars across the board with a positive comment was an abuse of the feedback system. If something is so bad to warrant all low stars then it does not warrant a positive.

That's why I am careful where I leave the very occasional poor star. If I am unhappy only at item quality then i would only leave a low star in that category after contacting the seller of course.

or like me they just misunderstood the star system, as not everyone thinks if its adequate it merits 5 stars, and nearly everyone I have spoken to about this star system doesnt even realise it gets people banned.

In another post I think you told me because the average rating is above 4 stars it must mean I am an odd one out when I wasnt dishing out 5 stars to everyone, but it does seem one reason why averages are so high is ebay is running around removing low rateings which pushes up the averages. I have been giving 5 stars since my last post on here but personally i feel the star system is unfit for purpose when anythign below 5 stars is considered worthy of banning someone and ebay staff are deleting ratings, a site that deletes ratings has a credibility problem.

In most walks of life - 4 or 4.5 out of 5 would be excellent. But Ebay are not normal.

I have noticed all my limits on my personal accounts have been lifted. Another attempt by Ebay to 'fiddle' the figures.

Ebay's profits may continue to rise - but thats because for 15 years - many people have been joining from scratch and people who did not have the internet. But the fact is - many users are leaving - and when Ebay reaches saturation point - it will start having to do something its never been able to do - keep exisiting ebayers happy.

On the e-Bay community boards there is from time to time discussion on the direction the platform is taking. Most agree that e-Bay want to remove very small private sellers and concentrate on the big multi-nationals where 90% of the profit comes from.

I suspect politics is involved, which would explain the huge growth in sub-standard sellers from mainland China. The USA want American business to increase trade there.

On a side note, the U.S treasury recently instructed e-Bay to no longer list coins or stamps from the Sudan and Iraq. American politicians consider selling or buying a 120 year old stamp on e-Bay is supporting not very nice regimes.
The stupid thing is that if very rare minerals were discovered in the Sudan, then that country would become Americas new best friend.

America is also ordering Ebay to add state taxes to sales - pushing prices up.

Ebay started with private sellers - to dump them would be a big mistake. I spend a fortune on Ebay - i would not even log in if i didnt sell too.

The frequency of free listings suggests they still need private sellers. Never bite the hand that feeds you - Ebay are treading a dangerous line. Without private/small sellers - they are just another shopping comparison site.

Hi Folks, It's coming up to review time again on ebay- so it might be worth taking a look at your expanded dashboard in detail to make sure there are no nasty surprises. I'm still watching to see if my recent neutral has any stars attached to it- nothing so far, so fingers crossed.

Unusually it is your item description and communication that has caused the restriction and they can be difficult to work out why. However, the first thing to do is to get stuff listed and sold and good feedback coming in, if you stop selling then the poor stars will become more and more of a problem as they become a higher percentage of the total when the better stars fall off.

You can get automatic 5* on communication by not actually communicating at all and having a one day despatch time. The item description may perhaps take some investigation just to see why you have done poorly there.
