What about all the businesses who offer direct payment by cc or dc like me? If you only search for paypal you would miss all of these unless they also offer pp.
I have paypal and direct payment on my ebay listings, have done for a couple of months, I get about 25% of customers now ringing me , that way I am able to take their order directly and process their payments myself, one or two have insisted on still going through ebay (a sale is a sale) but most have been happy to order direct.
I in no way encourage off ebay sales in my listings, but I do state that I am happy to answer any questions, I also say there are special deals for multiple purchase - ring for details. The deals are there in my shop for all to see, IF they look hard enough, most are too lazy and ring up:p .
It might be very crafty, but I would much rather pay 2% in merchant fees than 10% + through ebay and paypal.;)
Interestingly I also get website customers ringing to order rather than use paypal checkout, I haven't had a single website order paid via paypal, even though customers have more often than not come through the ebay link to my site, buyers seem to distrust paypal as much as sellers do.
I will definitely switch to google if it ever becomes available from my website company, at the moment they only have paypal checkout - unfortunately.

I'd love to see google succeed and paypants get royally shafted.

But I did think it worth pointing out that there was a downside to the technique mentioned.

I'll admit that I may miss out on a few items, but I wasn't aware that there was a legitimate means of paying for auction items via cc without going through pp. I also found that, with the type of items I buy only a minute fraction of sellers did not take pp. This is dangerous as after religiously checking a few hundred and finding they all take pp it's possible to forget to check - and you can bet that will be the guy who doesn't take it. So it's pp only in the searches.

I don't want to risk buying something and finding I need to pay a couple of hundred pound to an (often foreign) seller with no reversibility.

i don't mention nochex at all in my listings - if i include a nochex payment link in the listing, i find that it looks messy, is something buyers are not familiar with & ultimately puts people off.

i simply select the credit/debit card payment option when doing a listing. additionally i mention in 'sellers payment instructions' that i take credit/debit cards. then when a winning buyer selects credit/debit card as their payment option i reply to the auto-ebay email that arrives (confirming how they want to pay), with my nochex payment link.

Must admit I'm very surprised that buyers will give their full credit card details address etc to a stranger over the phone. What if your ebay account had been hijacked?
But if they do may have to consider doing this myself.
  • Moglex, sorry, I do accept paypal and I have qualified for the PP protection for my buyers, so people who only search for Paypal items will see my listings. I am for accepting all methods of payment as I see a sale is a sale. The same for my searching, I will look at all the items not just the ones that accept paypal.

Stuart P, I never thought of putting I accept debit or Credit cards and then just forwarding them a link to pay through nochex. I think that I will give that a go and see how well it is taken. I know alot of people want to pay on plastic for peace of mind.

    I.

As long as paypal is one of the options offered then I would see the auction, so if you are offering credit cards as wel as paypal I would see your auctions.

  • I very often give my credit card details out over the phone. Funny isn't it, were all up in arms over fraud on eBay, yet I bet quite a few of us have done mail order using a credit card and given out the details over the phone.

My DH collects some strange items and often via small private websites advertised in specialist magazines. I'm always astonished at how little security there is on some of these websites, it is not uncommon for there to be no security at all and to have to supply all your credit cards details on an open server. When I question the owners I am usually offered the chance to send the details by email instead, usually to an anonymous Hotmail account.

When I refuse to use unsecured sites I am always told that 'no one has ever complained before'!

Isn't there a £70 or so limit on sending Nochex payments in any 3 month period before you have to go through a lengthy verification process?
I.e If your item sells for more than £70 or the buyer has previously used Nochex in the last 3 months they can't pay you immediately and have to wait to be verified?
Might not be a problem for you waiting but likely to be a problem for your buyer when you have stated you take CC and DC payments.

£99 per card per day can be used for buyers paying sellers via nochex. not sure of other limits.

you can have a merchant account with nochex that'll accept any size payment aswell as international payments but you need to be high-volume nochex user
