But then if every seller offer's Google Checkout going against ebay rules, are they really going to ban everyone.

Personally, I will offer Google or Cheque only now, see if ebay like that.

Take care with this strategy. Firstly you won't get many sellers risking their accounts by showing google on their listings..I won't risk it now I've seen it is specifically banned. So if a very small percentage of users add it, then yes ebay will start pulling auctions, just as they pull those (when reported ) for offering cash payments.

Then I think you will have a more serious problem. Your competitors, or other sellers generally will see you as an unfair competitor and just keep turning you in..so you'll be shut down quite quickly.

There was a huge fuss about nochex when it was first banned, the protest was well orchestrated, nochex themselves ot involved there was talk of boycotts. Ebay even reinstated nochex as an acceptable payment method for a while, then suddenly it went and the protest died and now nochex is banned again. It must be remembered that nochex had a great advantage over Google in that they had a fairly large established user base, so people were already using it.

Whilst ebay specifically ban the use of Google, I can't see it getting much of a hold on ebay as the percentage of users preferred to lose their accounts will be tiny. I still see google as a great opportunity for another auction site to get its act together and do some real campaigning.

Bring on googlebay! Surely a successful auction site would generate more revenue than that earned from advertising ebay on google?? Would ebay really pull the plug on its google advertising given the dominance of google (I read that 75% use google as their main search engine.)

I think that google have got a great chance to create an auction site which can eventually rival ebay.

As has been said this is competing with World Pay and the like but maybe they also will integrate it as a payment system with Google Base (a fixed price rather than auction system) which is already up and running.

I agree. Looking at the US news on Google checkout, where of course Google has been active for a while, it is not really seen as a competitor for paypal at all. It is seen as a competitor to World Pay and plans seem to take over the internet shopping payment schemes, there seems to be no real attempt to take on auctions or paypal per se.

Maybe because we are all centred on ebay we see that as 'the market' but I'm sure World pay must have huge potential. Lots of large sites like CD Wow use World pay so maybe Google are more interested in that area?

you could mention you take 'credit/debit card' payments (an acceptable payment method on ebay) in your ebay listing - without mentioning the google word - then simply send invoices to the buyers after the auction closes via email with all your payment methods including google!

I would love for there to be another auction site that rivals eBay, but history would suggest it's not likely to happen.

Yahoo tried and failed at a time when Yahoo was arguably in a more dominent position compared to eBay (in terms of usage and brand awareness) than Google is today.

Amazon has also tried, and failed.

As others have said, eBay/PayPal isn't Google's target.

Thats a good idea, so the 'Google' world is banned on ebay then?

The only problem with that is that if people don't see paypal they may not look any further.

And if you have searches set up with 'only show items with paypal' you won't find auctions set up like that.
