I think this is a brilliant idea and highly motivational. At the moment I'm 37 years young and living with my parents in order to save for a mortgage. I've managed to save £3400 so far but I'm also still spending like a demon, as it's the first time for years I've had most of may pay not going on rent/bills/loans and other essentials. This spending is mainly on clothes, toiletries and eating out. How many pairs of boots does a girl need!

I urgently need to curb my spending, as after buying a house in the spring/summer I want to change careers from teaching to Ed Psych but I'll have to study for and pay for an Psychology MSC in order to get on the course. Let's just say I've got my plans in place but all I seem to do is haemorrhage money. Any tips to resist my urge to splurge would be gratefully received!

At the moment I also have a £200 credit card limit with Capital one, which I pay off every month; a £500 credit card debt wih HSBC, minimum payments are made on that. Plus I've pushed my overdraft up to £1400, which I'm mad at myself about.

I know I can curb spending on food and get that down to £20 a week. I've got lots of stuff stocked up in the freezer. I think I need a little push!

Apart from all that it's a big month for birthdays in my family. It's my Mum's 70th on the 23rd and I've already said I'll take her away for a break somewhere, maybe to Northumberland. Do any of you know of any nice, reasonable guesthouses in Seahouses or Bamburgh? Plus there will be a meal out too and me and my siblings will pay for hers.

I am rather tempted by this challenge but a little apprehensive too.

  • ... a friend recently made all hers from scratch.. found the 4yr old sat on the cooker two hours later eating it cold from the pot of left-overs. Must have been good!

Don't say that around kat, she'll have you numbered up before you know it :rotfl:

I agree with her on this one, just do it!!!

I was meant to be meeting a friend of mine tonight for a catch up over dinner but she had to call off cos she had a migraine. We arranged to do it in the next few weeks  I think I just found my first spend day!

This challenge has taken on a life of it's own. How wonderful that so many people are joining in :)
  • Bother! I've stumbled across my first problem.

I don't buy magazines through the year but I do always treat myself to the Good Food Christmas magazine.

I should just say NO! but I really, really, really love looking and trying out the foodie items for Christmas.

I'm thinking about indulging in the lovely makes on Pinterest for free, but I can't help getting a little upset that I won't be doing one of my traditions this year.

What would you do fellow NOers?

Good Morning to you... I have cut and paste a few comments that I feel need to be drilled into you. These are YOUR words.... I am saying this with all the love in the world because you have come for help - that is what we are here for.... this might sound incredibly harsh but the way you are saving / spending etc means you will NEVER get what you want if you continue the way you are going.. Time to make some changes..

A harsh scenario..... you may continue as you are.. spend what you want, go out when any friend asks, buy anything in the sales "because your saving money right" - WRONG.. you are still buying what you said you don't need - clothes, beauty bits and boots.... you continue to put money away as you are and come the summer you will not have enough..

You will still be with your parents, you will not have money for the MSc because you will feel guilty about STILL being with your parents AND having to pay for this....

In the summer when you want to be painting your new house, knowing full well that the long days can be spent in your own little garden studying with the doors open and the walls drying... that you can now start saving for a SMEG fridge... some Global knives for your kitchen.. a new sofa with matching arm-chair.. or even the most basic.. a boiler cause its just failed on you..... but you won't be doing this because you will still be with your parents.... but at least you have a nice pair of new boots right..???

You NEED at least a £15000 deposit for a £150,000 house... you NEED £2500-£7000 for legal fees / stamp duty / surveyors reports etc. This all depends on where you live...and this is BEFORE the furniture which I HOPE you will be buying second hand..

Not many people have the opportunity to live with parents - I am in London, mine are in Northern Ireland.. you are WASTING this chance for sheer frivolity ..You have come here for a wake up call and you are getting it...

I will not sit here and tell you its OK... its not! You and I both want our own house.. if you are TRULY in a position to save put that money towards the debts.. clear them out...

Why do you have this money saved when you are paying minimum payments on a credit card? This is one of Martins ( :money:All Hail the Master and Commander :money:) main tips.. you are earning more in interest on your credit card that you will ever earn in interest on your savings.. effectively letting money slip through your fingers.... Do not see it as "wasting savings".. this is silly!

This will effect your credit report the longer you leave the debt on your card / in your bank.. paying minimum payments it not a good idea.... you will come back as a failure from the first credit check done by any mortgage adviser and that in turn will affect your credit report again ( showing the failure on your report ).... the mortgage lenders will SCRUTINIZE everything you have bought in the previous 5 months and want to know how you live.. what are they going to see??

This thread will help you realize just how much is going out each month..

:snow_grinAll hail the illustrious MountainMum! :snow_grin

71/2 months pregnant with baby number 3 and definitely not allowed to join due to this... We are childhood school friends and have known each other for years...

When I tap tap tap at home in London she is sat in front of a log fire in NI, with a beautiful forest outside her house, a country estate to explore, a garden of vegetables ( albeit frozen to death).. a home-made jacuzzi getting built ( her husband is a genius with a saw and nails ) and some genius ideas of where to find coupons...

    WELCOME you little Irish lurker...:T:T:T
