Tell us, PaulF - were you raised by wolves? Or by parents who sacrificed things in their lives in order to feed you/support you?

Because in the past, this was the general way of things - we (speaking personally) helped our children, including helping to finance their first steps on the housing ladder. We did not "eat our own children's future" as you so graphically put it - we invested in their futures. This is what our generation did - will you do the same?

also have a death sentence if you become seriously ill past retirement age.

Was there somebody else who voiced opinions along these lines with respect to the disabled or mentally handicapped....

The name escapes me for a moment but I think it might have begun with H.......

Fast-forward 15/20 years ......what will PaulF81 be doing???

He will be worried by the emerging policies of younger generations to deny all heathcare to anyone imperfect citizen who gets so much as appendicitis as a way of driving down heathcare costs.

tell me, what options did your grandparents have? why should you be able to sacrifice your childrens futures just for a little extra longetivity? ours are the first generation in history that have had this option and i believe they have made the wrong choice.

Your grandparents were, I believe, the generation that fought that you might have liberty, that rejoiced in the fact that their children and grandchildren would have a better life than they had with the inception of the NHS/welfare state.

Paul - I am absolutely appalled by the vitriol you have expressed.

If you had spoken this way about any other section of society - ie ethnic minorities, persons of colour, Jews, Muslims, Gays etc you would have been flamed.

    Have you no shame.

Yes previous generations have fought for freedom of speech, but this is "Incitement to Hatred" of the worst sort.

vat raises a paltry 13 billion a year. pensioners have little expeniture and typically incur far below average duty (fuel, stamp etc).

raise taxes on big corporations and all their uk employees will be looking for new jobs. look what is happening in france right now due to socialist policies, their laffer curve will swerve right to the left and their total tax take will fall through the floor.

foreign aid needs cutting, but is around 10% of what pensioners cost us annually - a drop in the ocean really.

VAT has raised over £98bn so far this financial year - it accounts for around 7% of GDP.

Your £13bn looks like the amount of additional revenue raised by increasing VAT from 17.5% to 20%.

Pensioners have the same expenditure as everyone else - why would you think they have very little.

The probably have higher fuel bills than someone working as they can be at home all day (not to be seen as excuse to get them out sweeping the streets on some form of pensioner Workfare). They still have to eat, clothe themselves, pay their bills just like anyone else.

I wonder what the surviving Battle of Britain pilots would make of this excuse for an RAF officer icon9.gif

Nobody made a real choice. We all live our lives as best we can with the cards we are dealt. Each generation should accept that they have had some advantages and some disadvantages that have made their lives what they are. Your generation has benefited from from universal heathcare and education. You may think its imperfect but those in their seventies grew up without these advantages. Baby Boomers have benefited from housing costs being lower but your generation pays much less for food. Many baby boomers did not enjoy all the labour saving gadgets your generation takes for granted. This is life! Governments over many years have used current income to finance pensions and healthcare. Trying to accound for what individuals have paid in is very difficult and not that helpful. I agree that retirement age should be used to make the books balance in the long term but taking such a vindicive attitude to different generations is not helpful.

If anything, it would do the OAP community a world of good. I would hate to be a pensioner and lonely, sat at home waiting for the next pension cheque.
Why are you expecting to be lonely once a pensioner? I didn't rely on the workplace to make friends and intend to still have several of my friends when I reach pension age
Come to that, why would you be sat at home, there's plenty of ways to get out and about and follow your interests or find new ones, whatever age you are
You never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow
