Retired people could work for pensions..

The biggest demographic group is the boomer (about to retire)/OAP generation, quid pro quo its this group that have their interests looked after whilst earlier generations have the quality of their education cut, higher taxation, poorer healthcare and extortionate living costs.
.
What on earrth are you taking about?
Educational opportunity is till much higher than when boomers left school, mostly without the opportunity of going on to higher education.
The same is true of heathcare. The cuts that are being made will have more impact on the reired than the younnger generations.
Everyone pays tax and tax has been higher in the past than it is now.
Everyone is affected by inflation and it has a disproportionate impact on pensioners.
The generational war that you seem to want to fight is part of the divide and conquer policies of this Government. The crass ideas that pensioners should be made to work for their "benefits" is grossly insulting to those who have lived their life as best they can. If these ideas were ti take off ( and they will not) its the younger generations that will suffer because the free labour force will simply prevent job opportunities for those unfortunate enough to be unemployed. Those who planned to retire will just work on again depriving the unemployed job opportunities.
The same crass ideas floated by the Government of making the long term unemployed work while superficially reasonable have the same effect. By all means make people on benefits do jobs but create real jobs for them to do and pay them a living wage for doing them. For those who do not want to work it will have the same effect. But those who do (the majority) will gain more self respect.
But applying these ideas to OAPs is to effectively say you are not entitled to a pension, you must work longer and receive benefits for the rest of your life.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
No different than being told you will work till 75 when you are 32.
You say that now but I doubt you will say it then!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
the fact that pensions is the single biggest benfit, multiple times other forms of benefit, says a lot.
Its not a benefit its a pension that people are entitled to as a right!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

It was from the lips of a former labour minister I think you will find mr class warrior
Was his name Mr Class Warrior? If not who was he?
If you are calling me that name I again ask for your evidence>Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
It's a benefit. Ask those who have private pensions and are means tested through taxation of their pension.
As you well know its a taxation of their income not their pension. That does not make it a benefit.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
The pensioners who have retired around the EU countries, are they included - how would that work? (it wouldn't)0

In all seriousness, I dont know why any OAP wouldnt want to get involved. There would have to be some form of transport put on by the state, most of the OAPs I am involved with locally are VERY active in the community (parish council, local schools, charity fund raising etc).
If anything, it would do the OAP community a world of good. I would hate to be a pensioner and lonely, sat at home waiting for the next pension cheque.
Having just retired - I certainly have no intention of just sitting at home feeling lonely. I am taking a little Recovery Time and Catch-Up Time initially after all those years of working at a job I hated and that has "drained the life" out of me. But one of the things I plan for my retirement is a little voluntary work (as in a few hours a week - not a full-time job or even 20 hours per week worth) at an organisation of MY choice doing tasks of MY choice. That is the crucial difference and, of course, should I be feeling too ill temporarily to keep on doing that voluntary work of MY choice - then there will be no problem in me "putting it on hold" until I feel well again. During the rest of that extra free time I have every intention of "getting out and about" and joining things and making new friends. Actually I think I'm a lot less likely to be lonely than I was whilst having to hold down a job.
With said few hours per week voluntary work of MY choice - then I will be doing it willingly and to the best of my ability and therefore making a real contribution. After all "one volunteer is worth 2 pressed men" or whatever that phrase is. You can just imagine how grudgingly/badly a pressganged "volunteer" would do any tasks they were forced to do.
You also seem to be taking no account whatsoever of the fact that many OAP's aren't in good enough health to be able to manage to do any job (be it paid or pressganged "voluntary") and it is a necessity and blessing for them that at least they're not having to try and force a weary/pain-racked old body into work each day to "earn their crust".0
