Retired people could work for pensions..

who is sitting on the assets that caused the banking crisis?
we wouldnt have a deficit if we didnt have an nhs (main recipients oaps) or alternatively didnt pay pensions.
Aw - go on - make my day. Just tell us that you believe all pensioners should volunteer for euthanasia then:cool:
That way - none of us would claim a penny in pension or ever ask for any healthcare.
You could then sit back quite happy at the thought that you weren't paying a penny towards any pensioner needs - conveniently forgetting the little fact that YOU too would have to "volunteer" for euthanasia as well (whether you like it or no) the second you retire.0 -

you didnt pay enough into the system to entitle you to what the state pension pays out today.
instead, you expect younger generations to pay your way. admittedly, you seem to have done the decent thing and got a private pension.
just because you are old doesnt change the fact some oaps have lived their lives taking more from the state than they have put in. oaps shouldnt be entitled to any more than younger generations can expect to recieve when they retire.
For your information I paid NI contributions for 49 years but they cut it back to 30 years to qualify for the state pension. Also I have never claimed any benefits and have also made sure I paid into private pensions to give me a reasonable standard of living.
Please do not try and make me feel guilty because unlike so many in this country I can hold my head up high.0 -
Everything is better now for the younger generation, except House Prices & Jobs. Things you take for granted we never got till much later in life, Plasmas, Mobiles, central heating, holidays abroad.etc, etc make you own list.0

as a 40% taxpayer with a private pension and not due to retire due to previous generations greed until probably 75.
Ah, so you're a benefit scab too then.
Your pension contributions are subsidised by the taxpayer - and as a higher rate taxpayer, very nicely too.
When you've been paying NI contributions and tax (higher rate for 30 years) for 40 years or more then come back and moan.
Private pension must be poor if you think you're going to have to work until you're 75.0 -
As posted ealier many pensioners already help each other with daily tasks...the idea of reducing the state pension is nonsense..
I've just seen an article...1980 the OAP was 24% of average earnings....today its 18%...as the link was removed decades ago..
Bus passes...TV licence...winter fuel payments are the only adjustments to this shortfall....so in general the overall package is roughly the same.
No government is going to reduce the NI contributions from 44 years to 30 years without a reason...to qualify for a state pension.
On the subject of final salary pensions....its amazing how a long term scheme can be introduced and less than 40 years later it collapses.
Global investment by UK companies has resulted in the UK workforce being dramatically cut over a generation...final salary pensions were used to aid workers into early retirement..
We've ended up with schemes where theres more pensioners than workers...they have closed...the long term plan has failed.0 -
Here you go, the evidence... Whilst many oldies whine about the mail and how their taxes (not that they pay any anymore) are wasted on the yoof, you need to understand where the DWP actually goes, so here it is, 09-10.
36%. Thats mammoth compared to all other benefits. 77 BILLION on pensions alone (including winter fuel allowance). I think as a higher rate tax payer I should expect a little more back from pensioners in response to this payment. around 12 million pensioners, thats nearly 7000 per pensioner per year. Assuming the average lifespan of those currently on pensions is around 20-25 years, thats 140-175K per pensioner. Are you REALLY telling me that these individuals paid this vast sum of money in taxation and NI contributions, once you account for expenditure such as MIRAs, the NHS etc? Of course they didnt! I still maintain for this reason, that OAPs are the biggest Benefits scammers going! not their fault but no-one should be able to rely on the state for their retirement, in the same way no one should be able to rely on the state during thir working years!
Here are the details for NHS expenditure:Portion of total NHS spending by age group.
Live Births 25.81%
0-4 5.92%
5-15 2.35%
16-44 3.78%
45-64 5.27%
65-74 10.07%
75-84 17.85%
85+ 28.95%
Source: Dept of Health
OAPs (defined here as over 65) cost us annually 57% of the annual NHS budget. thats 57% of a 63 Billion budget, or another 35 billion for the OAP community, or another £4750 per OAP, which over 20-25 year life expectancy will cost another £95-£119000
Add this to what they are costing us in benefits and you can rapidly see that they have never paid anywhere near enough into the system.
Solution? Quite simple really. Stop spending thousands on life prolonging treatments (a recent trip to papworth saw 70% of its inpatients of OAP age). Give everything you need to assist comfort, but whilst we have a system that is prolonging the unproductive sector of our population, we will go bust. Those are the facts. They are unpleasant, but unless something drastic is done in terms of cost, we will go bust. The other option is to raise the OAP age for ALL to 75 with 5 years grace, pensioners are enjoying the same life expectancy that I can expect, so why should they get more years work free? If that includes free community work so be it. For those that already contribute, they wont have to do any more. for those that dont, they need to start. We are all in this together. allegedly.0 -
someone earning the average salary will pay £7555 a year tax so for the 50 years most of them will have worked they will have paid £377k direct tax so that leaves £200k spare . Bear in mind that direct tax now is at the lowest it has's ever been. Then you have all the indirect tax they have paid and are still paying + any direct tax they are still paying.0

It ain't pensioners fault their share of the pot isn't covered by NI contributions...its been well known for decades...and it looks like it will go on and on..
Many pensioners only get 100 quid a week...thats their little lot...its not much to ask for working their lives..they deserve it..
