Tesco do not have any common sense

I bought a printer at £50 in the clearance 3 weeks ago. I hadn't opened it and noticed it had been reduced further to £25 but there was no stock left anywhere.
I went to the customer service desk and said I'd like to take it back and get a refund for £50 and then buy the same item I just returned back for £25. They said I wasn't allowed to do this then the manager came down and said it was because the item has to be sent away for testing even though I was ready to pay for it as I had just returned it seconds ago. So frustrated :mad:

    No.

They do not have to sell it back to you.

Tesco used to have a policy whereby anything reduced down within 30 days they would give you the difference.

    Has this stopped now?

When you originally bought the printer in the clearance sale you were quite happy to pay £50 for it! That's it, transaction complete. Tesco are under no obligation at all to give you what is effectively a £25 refund 3 weeks later.

Would you have rushed back to the shop to insist on giving them money if the price had gone up?

Also a bit of a Zen question, but how could the printer be on sale if there was no stock left?

  • People would try the same thing when I used to work in sales, we would take the item back give the refund and the item would go out the back and might not go back on the shop floor for a few days/hours (or a staff member would buy it)

If the original customer was lucky enough to get the item again then they were lucky but generally it was them that lost out.

Can I rephrase your title 'I don't have any common sense but Tesco do'

    Yes it can be.

I have often seen empty spaces with the SEL still there.

    No..

If due to the terms Tesco sold you the item you had a right to return for a refund within a specific timeframe, you would be entitled to a refund. That is the point all your rights and entitlements to the item end. Tesco could effectively refund the item put it back on the shelf you could go and pick up the item and Tesco could still refuse to sell it to you.

Usually in situations like this its easier just to 'lose' the product somewhere in CS or the warehouse for a few days than risk arguing with a customer over reselling the item to them.
