Tesco do not have any common sense

  • They said I wasn't allowed to do this then the manager came down and said it was because the item has to be sent away for testing

Irrespective of it being the same person who both returned then repurchased the printer, their system will show that an electrical item was returned to the store as being unwanted and the store manager probably has to follow the company procedure for dealing with this.

If they didn't have this system in place, what would stop me buying an item, taking it home and sabotaging it then returning it to the store knowing that would simply pass it on to another customer?

I wouldn't be surprised to find that there is either some form of trading legislation that covers the resale of items such as this, or at the very least, a voluntary scheme that retailers abide by.

A - I return the product, and get my £25 back via refund/buying again.

B - I return the product and don't buy again. Tesco therefore have an open box product that has to get sent away for testing. Option A is also cheaper for Tesco

I know what you're saying and I agree, but my case is an exception.

C - as you have no legal right to a refund, tesco refuse to give you one, and keep the 50 quid while you keep the printer, having wasted yet more time. Option C is the cheapest for Tesco.

Why is it an exception ? They deal with exactly the same situation as you have presented every single day. And as you found, the answer is no :)

I do have a legal right to a refund as its in 28 days and the product is unused.

C - Tesco treat you as in your original post. This is the best outcome for Tesco.

B sounds a pretty valid option - do you really think they want you as a customer?

Do you mean Tesco's T&Cs instead of legal right ? Do they give the right of return for printers ?
  • If the 28 day return policy is stated before the purchase is made, then it would form part of the contract and would therefore give the purchaser the legal right to a return.
