When I turned 40, OH bought me a charm bracelet and asked close friends and family to each buy a charm which represented their relationship with me, or signified and important event from that year. These included a champagne bottle to represent my promotion, an Eiffel tower (I met my best friend in Paris), a disc with my goddaughters name on it and a Ruby - my sister's birthstone. Oh, and an Elephant which was my favourite toy as a child. It came from my brother and I was so touched that he had remembered.
Charms can be picked up relatively cheaply and apparently everyone had a good time trying to think of ones that would be relevant and meaningful to me.
  • I was 40 yesterday! Had no idea what I wanted but did want something 'permanent'. We have a 2 yr old and no family close so a trip away was ruled out. I'm also not really a jewellery person but got some diamond earrings from the LO and an eternity ring from hubby (although it's away for resizing do won't be back until next week, it was all a bit last minute!). We've been looking for a pendant but it's proving a bit hard...OH is 40 next year and I have no idea what to get him!?

You are in similar position. My family are 100 miles away and there is just my hubby my boy and I. I think I will have to look for some jewellery. I don't wear much at the moment incase it gets broken. I have week in the sun on my birthday so that's all I need. If I just tell my hubby what I think I will let him do the rest. I will save the trips away for my 50th when my boy is big enough to enjoy as well.

Thanks everyone, you have been really helpful
  • My OH turns 40 next year. I ave booked a surprise week in Switzerland with our 4 year old and 6 month old, his brother and partner, his sister and partner, his mum and grandma.

Can't wait, nothing beats spending time with family for a special occasion.

If you go for a watch get a proper mechanical one, e.g. Omega, Rolex, Oris, Tag. Never saw the point in spending a fortune on a quartz watch.

Yes, I agree but I have already booked a week in Lanzarote for my birthday as I didn't want to be 40 in the cold. Family are coming with us. I have a 19 months old boy so not easy to get away from it all, need to be a mum.
Camel ride up the volcano, or submarine trip off the coast, or glass bottomed boat round the island.

For my 40th, my family bought me a lovely brooch and clip earrings (my ears aren't pierced) but they've tarnished slightly and when I tried to clean them there's a texture on them which rubs off.

For my 50th, they bought me a necklace and bracelet, not precious metals or stones, both of which I like but the bracelet has broken twice and I'm not sure it's repairable. The in-laws bought me a posh pen and pencil set, would something like that be good?

We've just bought my big sis a posh purse for her big birthday, she knew the kind of thing she wanted, at least 12 credit card slots and a big zip section for coins. She also wanted a suitcase but wants to choose that herself. I was doing the collecting and purchasing on behalf of everyone else, and I collected 12 £5 notes, ironed and folded them and put one in each slot of the purse. I also put 60 x 1p coins in the coin section. :D

I wrapped it in 60th birthday paper, then made a model suitcase out of an Amazon box and some K'nex for the retracting handle and wheels. :rotfl: Then I put that in another Amazon box and wrapped that in paper which had postcards all over it.

We all met for lunch at a nice pub, and then went onto a NT property for tea / a wander round the gardens. Very pleasant day.

For those wondering what to get for the men in their lives, DH has had a very nice leather briefcase as a special present, is a 'man bag' a possibility?

  • I hit 40 next year. It will only be like any other birthday so won't be after any "special" gifts!

Hello, my OH is 40 next week and have no idea what to get him. He is into writing and would love to be a professional writer one day. We went on a holiday in October and have our wedding early in January with a honeymoon to New York so a bit skint on booking a trip away. Would like to get him something to cherish, like to think of good presents, any ideas?

I think I'd go for a decent pen and pencil set, and / or a large USB stick perhaps with a 'novelty' aspect - I have a heart, the boys have had cars and aeroplanes, for example - with instructions that it's for backing up his first novel / great work / collected stories etc.

Thanks Savvy Sue for your idea. Has anyone got any good links for an engraved pen and pencil set?

I am going to also cook a romantic three course meal instead of going out for a meal to try and save money but still be special.
