My 40th is early next year too. I'd rather have a child free weekend away, preferably New York, than a gift.

But if I really had to choose a gift I'd love some Tiffany.

What are your interests. Do you enjoy going to the theatre or to music concerts etc? I celebrate my 40th next April and my twin sister and I are planning a weekend break together in London. We are currently choosing which show to go and see. On the Sunday we are going to have afternoon tea at the Ritz. I am not one for wearing much jewellery and would far prefer to have a wonderful memory of spending time with someone special than have anything else.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

For my 40th [5 years ago tomorrow - meep] - my OH and I went to New York [we'd been before] and stayed at the Chelsea Hotel - which is now closed. We went out every night and day and went to my favourite theatre [also now closed down] and restaurant [again, now closed]...it was one of the best holidays I've ever had.

    That or a watch....hmm....

You are the kiss of death to businesses aren't you :D;)

  • we went on a city break for my OH's 40th few years back and got him a fancy watch (in the sale). I felt the need to celebrate his birthday but am not fussed about mine. I don't wear jewellery and have no real material wants as such and funds probably wouldn't stretch to a holiday either by then so I am in same boat as OP. No idea what I would want and wouldn't want family spending hard earned cash on something I will never use. I am actually one of the rare females who would actually appreciate something for the house, I could do with a new hoover, microwave or some carpet for my bedroom. I would rather money was spent on something of use not just for the sake of it but I know my family would look at me strange if I suggested a new carpet rather than a necklace!
  • I got a painting by one of my favourite artists for my 30th, as Mum wanted to give me a keepsake, and am planning on having a big party (with bouncy castleS!) for my 40th :D

You've got a while to think about it at least!!

I'm not much of a jewellery person but my friends and relatives wanted to buy me something special and its nice to have something you can keep so I chose a really nice simple ring and several of them paid for it between them, it cost around £120 and I love it.

My boyfriend took me to Finland for my 40th.It was perfect, we had a sauna in our room. On the day he gave me a Tiffany necklace-total surprise. The best thing about the whole trip was the thought that had gone into it. I had seen the necklace the year before and he had remembered.

I have a love links bracelet that OH got me for mine, even better I got it in goldsmiths so used tesco vouchers.

OH was 40 the same year as me, for his we went to Le Manoir aux Quat'saisons which is Raymond Blanc's restauraunt, we stayed the night in the most amazing room, had a lovely breakfast then back to reality with the children!

For mine we stayed in Bath and went out for a lovely meal.
