Present for my 40th birthday

I will be 40 early next year. Family are asking what they can buy me. They suggest something of value that I can keep. Jewellery springs to mind, maybe a watch. Don't know much about watches but my husband has a tag watch and he says it s worth more now than when he bought it.
i know gold has increased in value.

I would like something that lasts for a long time , that isn't going out of fashion

Suggestions gratefully appreciated

Thanks

Holiday to somewhere you've always wanted to go?
  • I'd rather have something to remember than something to keep. Especially as there doesn't actually seem to be anything you want.

How about they club together for a party or short break/holiday?

I agree about the short break. Maybe a city break abroad, and then you could buy a little necklace or bracelet there? That way you would have the memories AND the keepsake. It depends what the budget is obviously. :)

Yes, I agree but I have already booked a week in Lanzarote for my birthday as I didn't want to be 40 in the cold. Family are coming with us. I have a 19 months old boy so not easy to get away from it all, need to be a mum. Might get my hair done but that's about it. I don't really want anything. I spend all my time shopping for my boy now, don't really feel the need to treat myself now I am mum.

I could suggest more practical but then that wouldn't be a special keepsake.
  • I would say the nearest and dearest all do a great activity together.

Go up in a hot air balloon and have the photos to remember.

That's nice idea, I could think of doing something as a family, I was happy to just have holiday on my birthday with my family, but perhaps while we are on holiday we could do something special or when we get home. I will have a think.

    Thanks
  • A tag watch is unlikely to be worth more in reality. My tag cost £300 about 12 years ago. The same one is now about a £1000 but mine is only worth a second hand value which is probably less than I paid or sameish. Get one if you like them (I love mine) but they are probably only an investment if you keep them in a box and never use them.

  • For my 40th [5 years ago tomorrow - meep] - my OH and I went to New York [we'd been before] and stayed at the Chelsea Hotel - which is now closed. We went out every night and day and went to my favourite theatre [also now closed down] and restaurant [again, now closed]...it was one of the best holidays I've ever had.

    That or a watch....hmm....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
