Hairdressers - Cost cutting?

Definately agree with the trainee idea people have mentioned. I went to the Toni and Guy college on Oxford Street and got a cut and colour for £5!!
Took about 4 hours and had to be on the day they said though so not so good if you work full time!
Another thing I have done in the past is hair modelling - just go into the salon and ask if they need any models. This is normally for training etc so you don't have to look like Kate Moss (I'm not saying you don't just that it's not a requirement!!). You may have to be a bit more flexible with what you want but they normally ask you and as your hair is short anyway, they'll have to do a short cut on it!0 -
Think someone also mentioned getting someone to come to your house. That tends to be a lot cheaper.I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. If you wanna come a bit further east, Hastings College of Arts & Technology is famous for its hairdressers'. You can still get a very cheap cut/style from a 3rd year student, and thats right before they graduate!
Needless to say, we have a LOT of hairdressers in Hastings!!Mummy to two girls, 4 & 1, been at home for four years, struggling to contend with the terrifying thought of returning to work.0 -
can i just add to this that after two years you are qualified as a hairdresser,,, the third year is like an advanced / additional year. The majority of hairdressers in regular salons are only trained upto level two in regard to qualifications , all the rest of their skills comes from their exeperince and natural talent and ability. So, if you go to a college with a third year student, you are actually getting someone who is as qualified as most of the stylists in town salons, and sometimes they will even be students who have been hairdressing for many years but decided to go back to college to do their 3rd year for what ever reason.
I would def. recomend using either your local college or training salon.
Be clear about what you want, dont be afraid to say something during the cut if you are concerned about anything going on with your hair, although remember that they trainee may be a tad nervous too and shakey hands on a trainee hairdresser is never a great thing!,,and above all, enjoy the experience, ,,you will get a lot more attnetion that in a normal salon and you could be contributing to the career of the next Nicky Clarke or Daniel Galvin!

With colleges do you have to go in the week tho? As I usually work in the week and it sounds like they will take too long to cut my hair in my lunch break.Sorting my life out to give a better life to my:heartsmil 2 gorgeous boys :heartsmil0

Hi flis !
Some of the colleges are also open at night- usually the specailist beauty ones as years ago I went to so maybe phone around.
Also see if you know anyone who has a haridresser come to their house or any local haridressers who are training and want to earn some money on the side by coming to your house. All the hairdressers I have evr known did "homers" .Why dont you go back or phone up the hairdressers you usaully went to and ask poilietily if anyone knows where she has gone to- as she will have had some friends in there.I did thiswith my hairdresser once and she had gone out on her own so i got the cut cheaper by someone i knew ! Usually if you ask her friends or one of the juniors they will tell you .0 -
I third (or are we one fourth now?) going to a college to have your hair cut, it takes a while as they're learning, but it's supervised and very very cheap! They should do evening as well, you can always ring them and ask them.
I've had a look and the following colleges have hairdressing bits:

I have no idea how good any of them are, or how close they are to you, but hopefully it'll help!Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -

I too have a very short crop hair do, so I just have a "dry" hair cut. That is I do not have it washed. The stylist (I have had the same one for a long time) sprays it damp and cuts. This costs £14. I then go straight home and jump in the shower. I can blow dry my hair just as well as a hairdresser because it is short.
I also colour it myself at home. Again because it is short, I never get colour build-up as the twice coloured hair is cut off every five or six weeks.
This works for me.0 -
Hi there,if you don't fancy the college route, could I recommend a couple of salons for you

MAKO in Shoreham-by-sea is excellent, not the cheapest, but very good value for money and Neicia is a brilliant hairdresser (hope she doesn't mind the recommendation
) Shoreham is a bit of a trek from Eastbourne, but not too far.
Another cheap, but VERY good salon (if it's still there) is Shear Joy,on London Road in Brighton, this used to be The Southern School of Hairdressing,,but now it's a salon,on first glance it looks 'blue rinse' but they are very good hairdressers.
Brighton Tech does free or reduced cuts.
Good luck
