Absolute rubbish. No airline guarantees that you can sit together, even where seats are allocated upon check in, unless you pay extra. The fee for Priority Boarding is £2 per person. If you can afford to be flying in the first place, then I am sure that £2 isn't going to break the bank.

    I.
Last time I flew, I called up the airline after I recieved my tickets and booked my seating.

I don't really get the moaning about not getting a meal. What's the furthest Ryan Air Fly? Maybe 3 or 4 hours? Now, if you can't go without eating for 4 hours (unless you have a medical issue) then there are issues that need to be addressed!

As a regular traveller between London and Stockholm I've always found Ryanair to be pretty good. Punctuality has been great about 90% of the time and the worst delay was still less than two hours when a windscreen wiper was faulty. The staff on that particular route are pretty friendly and the only time that there was any pressure to buy scratchcards was when an English steward made up some sob story about them having to sell another 10 tickets to meet their target for the flight.

On the money side of things I have seen some major changes in the last year. In March 2006 I bought a £0.02 return which cost £30. That included taxes and a piece of luggage in the hold. In March 2007 the same ticket costs £55 and as the Friday night flight rarely seems to start below £7.99 I'm actually looking at £63 so a 110% increase.

They've also moved the business friendly morning flight so that I now have to fly with SAS or BA in order to get to work on time. On the plus side this has shown me that their starting return prices are now down to £97. As the cost of getting in from Heathrow or London City is much less the overall difference between airlines is now £20.

I'm grateful to Ryanair for making it possible for me to make these journeys over the past 10 years but it looks like they've finally forced the other airlines into a position where I can use them again.

I didn't even have to do that. I chose my seats (specific ones, not just a vague promise of sitting together) when booking online, for no extra fee.

you get 10kg per person, you can't pool peoples luggage allowance so sticking it all into 2 cases would save you the checking in fee but you'd have to pay for 20kg of excess baggage.

Actually you get 15kg per person plus hand luggage.

The average "lightweight" suitcase weights 5 kg alone!!!!
Its very easy to go over the limit.
So use a soft bag instead - I got a Nike one that holds about 60l and weighs about 1kg. On my last trip it & the luggage in for 2 weeks holiday weighed a total of 10kg plus 3 kg hand luggage.

As for Ryanair in general they have a great product BUT then ruin it all by trying to chisel money out of you at every stage of the booking process by including optional items in the price, adding them at various stages in the booking process, then making it difficult to work out how to remove the optional items - the classic is when you have hand luggage only & they automatically add online booking / priority boarding but making the removal of them a link

My needs are to receive patently safe transportation if I pay someone to provide it. I am not interested in spin that says well compared to this or that it isn't too bad is it? I know all about the assessment of risk and contractual risk transferance. If I buy a ticket, I no longer carry the risk myself. I am paying someone to manage the risk well so that I can close my eyes.

So in your illustration, Sam Bee, you are overlooking one very important thing ... most of us don't buy tickets to travel on the roads. And even if we do buy a bus ticket, we might end up on a Terravision bus that weaves down the road like a motorbike out of London at four thirty on a Friday afternoon, or something else which ends up on its side at Heathrow at midnight.

There is a huge difference between paying for safety in an assumed safe public transport system, and taking your own risk in or on your own vehicle alongside others doing their own thing too.
Yes, but anyone who assumes that any form of public transport is 100% safe is a muppet.

The original dig at rail safety was entirely unwarranted for the reasons that Sam has posted. Your comments don't undermine that.

PS There is still a way of overcoming Sam Bees checklist item:
    5) Pay by credit, erm, debit, erm Ryanair's credit, erm, !!!!!!, unable to get out of paying extra on this one .... get a VISA Electron card ... I actually asked Barclays for one just to stick it to Ryanair, but I would have had to give up my Connect Card which has other benefits apparently:-)
Or, “accidentally” choose Visa Electron from the list, when you have a Visa Delta card. The consensus has always seemed to be that Ryanair can’t tell the difference as they are processing the card details. It’s also very easy to get a basic bank account to get hold of a Visa Electron card. These accounts, by definition, have the least restrictions over who can open them.
