Love that song - the first cassette single I ever owned - my sister gave it to me to listen to while I was in hospital recovering from meningitis
Definitely along the right lines with the quieter voice, though!
I woke up dreaming about it last night and was hoping to engage some kind subconscious to remember...but all I came up with was jamiroquai or OK Go - neither of which I think are serious contenders, but I'll be checking this morning anyway0 -
Ok, how about Lazurus by the Boo Radleys.
Again, not a very good fit but has strong music / weak lyrics.
[Similarly Bittersweet Symphany by the Verve, but I'm guessing you would have known that one.]0 -

Yeah, you're right about the verve...and the Boo Radleys is a no go.
In exciting news, I'm off to the climbing centre tonight, so will try my best to interrogate them...but I expect a proper flurry of guesses this afternoon - surely everyone wants to be the person who gets the right answer before I find out!
(although I'm still not overly confident that I'll be able to find out...)0 -
Okeydokey

ps hurry up and get back from climbing we want answers!0 -
What about 'Always the Sun' by The Stranglers. I'm not hopeful but it popped into my head the other day when I was racking my brains so worth a shot!0

I wish I could hum it. If I could just get the right combination of dums, dumms and dummms, I'd post something like that link
Bad news on the climbing front - didn't have a chance to talk to anyone about itBut did climb my first 6c - a new years resolution I've been working on...so not a complete waste of an evening
Beginning to think I have to just let this go...0 -
Lots of great guesses. None from me, but a thanks to the OP. I heard the long intro to a song on my way to work the other day, but was running late so could not stay in the car to hear the vocals. First thing I did when I got into work was look up the radio playlist. I thought of you and didn't want to end up in my own private hell, sticking pins into youtube for the rest of my life etc. Disaster averted.
Interesting that you say you had a dream about the mystery song. When I am trying to remember something, I find it useful not to think about it and then it often just pops into my head. Try having some Zen time, but don't forget to keep posting!0 -
Purely on the basis of those backing singers, it's not the new Mick Hucknall single is it?

I'm gonna suggest Richie Sambora. It doesn't fit most of the clues, but it's a really good song so you should listen to it anyway - and it's by a male vocalist and has a catchy tune.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209
