Help with a song?

Options
OK, this is a long shot, but it's driving me proper crazy..

Heard a song out and about around a month ago and thought "oh, I really like this..." but I couldn't place who it was by - and now I can't remember the tune, which doesn't help :o

So, things I know about it to go on:

It was being played as part of quite an old-skool rock playlist, which had the offspring (conspiracy of one), foo fighters, metallica and skunk anansie (weak) on it, so maybe it's from that era...but I thought there was something quite modern about it - so either it's much more recent than those, or it's been used on something more recently (I've tried looking through olympics playlists etc, but haven't come across it).

I think I should know who it's by (ie it's someone quite famous) and I have a small inkling that it's a slight departure from their usual style - although I'm not so sure about that.

It's got quite a rock sound to the instruments..think Kings of Leon, but with a cleaner, more modern sound.

Hopefully the biggest clue: The vocals (I think male) are slightly quieter than normal and a little indistinct (which is why I was unable to make anything out to remember at the time)....vocals aren't "singing" as such, not much holding a note, but they're not rap.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was a male solo artists, but not 100%.

It's the melody that drives the song, not the lyrics.

I think there are something like four phrases of melody, then some backing vocals, then repeat...I tried to remember this, and I'm sure the backing vocalists say "Son, Son" or something that sounds similar to that...but I've googled "son son", "sun sun", "song song" and not found anything that helps :(

It left me feeling happy, it's not a sad song, or an angry song.

When I got down (I heard it at the top of a climbing wall) I hummed it to my belayer and he said it sounded a little like "knocking on heavens door", but I'm not convinced. That said, the closest I've got to remembering it (it's so frustrating, it's just in the back of my mind somewhere!) is when I've hummed something a bit like a cross between knocking on heavens door and the house of the rising sun.

I appreciate this thread sounds like a complete windup (all my friends have looked at me like I'm a nutjob when I tell them this is all I have to go on), but I swear it isn't...it's just driving me gradually insane having this song on the tip of my tongue, but not being able to place it.

Any suggestions would be *greatly appreciated* and I'll do my best to answer any questions :)

This is like one of those quiz questions designed so that Google can't help you!

No idea, I'm afraid. Any idea what it was about? Or any other words in the song?

I know. It's impossible to search any of it :(

No real ideas what it's about, other than something quite happy (I assume...like I said, I couldn't really make out 99% of the words, so the lyrics could be about something completely different, just set to quite a happy-ish tune).

I knew I had to have something to search on, and that's why I tried to remember the "son son" bit - but I guess it doesn't say "son son" afterall, based on my searches of that...

Do you know the tune and have a microphone on your pc? (just realised you said you can't remember the tune. ANY memory of the tune might help, think! lol)

Were they playing pre recorded music or the radio? Ask which station, and start listening to it all the time. Phone/email the radio/DJ, or see if previous recordings are available of the show e.g. bbc radio has lots of programs available to listen later.

No, it's not - but thanks for the guess...Has rather too many sings if anything. :) A little rockier than travis, I think...and a bit more of a modern sound.

I think they were playing an iPod. I asked them about it in there and they basically said "if you know how it goes we could tell you what it is..." but weren't much more helpful than that. Next time I'm in I'm going to try and get a little more help..Trouble is, I've never heard the same set of music in there twice, so if anything I imagine they just have it play through a given genre - which means it may be a bit of a needle in a haystack :(

(I have given a little thought to trying to steal the thing - that's how much this is doing my head in :))

I had one of these things on my iPhone and tried kinda riffing around the songs I think it sounds a bit like...I'm sure it starts in dum-diddy ;)...but I did it for a couple of hours and didn't get anywhere...but I'm sure if I got the tune right, I'd be able to find out what it is anyway..because I'm sure people would recognise it if they heard it.

I was going to suggest this but reading your description again I think not. I'm going to suggest it anyway, even if it's not the one it's a good song :)

Or Survival by Muse has a lot of backing vocals like 'son' or 'sing'

Pair of awesome songs there...but sadly no banana as they say :)

Lyrics are all a bit too prominent in reef...and muse is just a *little* too rocky, I think.

I keep thinking it should maybe be rock/pop as opposed to pure pop...I don't know why, but there's something about it that puts me in mind of more modern rocky/poppy stuff...like maroon 5, or that Alex Clare song....but I'm kinda thrown by all the other music it was amongst...doesn't make someone modern seem likely.

I just know it had a very kinda "recorded" sound...not quite like the instruments are sampled, but they're just very clean...it doesn't sound like a song that could easily be performed to sound the same way live...
