Hopefully the biggest clue: The vocals (I think male) are slightly quieter than normal and a little indistinct (which is why I was unable to make anything out to remember at the time)....vocals aren't "singing" as such, not much holding a note, but they're not rap.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was a male solo artists, but not 100%.

I'm sure the backing vocalists say "Son, Son" or something that sounds similar to that...but I've googled "son son", "sun sun", "song song" and not found anything that helps :(

bit like a cross between knocking on heavens door and the house of the rising sun.
OK, second guess, is it God's Gonna Cut You Down Johnny Cash, where "Run On" gets repeated quite a bit.

Thanks for the guess...but not rocky or modern enough and the lyrics are too distinct still...

Sorry if I sound like I'm criticising everyone's guesses, by the way...but I figure by saying what's wrong about each song it may help other people (or myself) work out what it actually sounds like.

Clearly there's a niche here for some kind of Akinator style "find that song" app :)

Yeah, "find that song" based on pretty much no details whatsoever!

A 69p download would be a lot cheaper than the regression therapy I'm starting to consider ;)

Oh blimey, you've got me wondering now!

There was a song that sounded like it was influenced by Knocking On Heaven's Door around at some point in the late 90s (so that would be when Skunk Anansie & Offspring were at their peak), but I can't remember what the song is at all.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

Nah, I'm not aware that it's a cover version...certainly not of anything classic. I have a half decent knowledge of music, so I don't think it's anything super-obvious. And there are too many remember-able words in it. Like I said, literally the only bit I could pin down was the "son son" bit in between each section...too bad that I seem to have misinterpreted that, too. :(

I really feel the key is in that the vocals are just a little bit quieter than usual, with quite an emphasis on the rolling melody of the song instead....

    Ooh, intriguing....think about it! :)
