    Butterfly by crazytown?

It has the sort of dum diddy bit as it starts off something like...

    Come my lady
    Come come my lady
    You're my butterfly
    Sugar baby
    Come my lady
    Come come my lady
    You're my butterfly

& quite a clean riff at the start too

    AND

The song consists mainly of a sample from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song "Pretty Little Ditty" with additional lyrics by Shifty Shellshock and Epic Mazur on top.
The song is referenced in DJ Paul Oakenfold's 2002 song, "Starry Eyed Surprise", in the line sung by Shifty Shellshock, "Freaky, deaky, star speckles and pink butterflies", in a manner similar to "Butterfly".

Covered by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine on their 2004 album I'd Like a Virgin.

    (if you believe wikipedia...:rotfl:)

Crazytown's a bit more...urban I think...and far too many memorable lyrics...(one of my favourite songs from back in the day, actually...Used to love Orange County when it came out). (quite like starry eyed surprise too, come to that :))

I see what you mean about the twangy guitar at the start, though...but the dum-diddy melody is all the way through. :)

I'm not sure there's a chorus to speak of, either...just the "son son" buts in between, which I'm going to recharacterise as "so-on, so-on" bits, as they're sung more than spoken, with the second half ("on") sung a little higher than the first half...

Ok, complete stab in the dark, not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zij70PCyBck

    Luka Bloom "I need love"

I know love does not sound sun or song but just in case! cracking tuneage anyway..

    Or the Streets? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Streets
  • My two guesses for today are:

    Avalanche - Soon, Soon? http://www.musictory.it/musica/Avalanche/Soon,+Soon
    Newton Faulkner - Soon? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmKB3D7L1hQ
    I was a DFW, now I'm a MFW :T
  • Is it Newton Faulkner - 'Soon'?

ETA - only just noticed above post - great minds ;-)

Why not go back to or phone the climbing wall people and ask them what CD they were playing on that date and time or what radio station they were playing? If the latter, have a look at the songs played for that date and time, most radio stations have a song list.

Like I said, I did ask them and they said it was probably an iPod playing through - but I get the impression a number of different staff have different things they play through when it's their shift - and I doubt they make any particular list of what's played when. I'd have asked on the night if I knew it was going to drive me this potty :o

Some of the staff are much nicer than others - I've been trying to wait until one of the nice ones is on their own and then I'll ambush them and try harder to get some answers. Trouble is, I come across as quite mental talking about this on the internet - and it's even worse in real life...really quite embarrassing...which is why I was hoping you lot could help before I have to make a total tit of myself :)

Also, it may not be easy to actually find the song even if I get access to the iPod - if they have any playlists then I stand a chance, but if they, for instance, just set it to play the genre "rock", it's total needle in a haystack time. Although... a) that would explain why a song I think is quite modern was mixed in with a bunch of classics and b) I still have the feeling that I'll know the song when I see the artists/name written down...

Thanks everyone for the continued suggestions. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone hits on it.

ETA: And positive stuff is coming out of this, anyway - hearing a lot of different music and some of it I quite like. I've even been convinced that I actually quite like muse - a band I was never 100% about before. Maybe I'll even think about buying a CD! :)

This is an amazing thread! I can't help you out I'm afraid - just wanted to say I'm loving reading about the search :)
  • Well it's been fun, but I'm running out of guesses, so this will probably be the last one...

My mind keeps turning to Eminem, but as I said before, it's not rappy...and part of me thinks the lyrics might be a little like the streets or arctic monkeys - kinda unashamedly British

Karl Phillips and the Midnight Ramblers - Strongbow

Enjoy! Even if it isn't what you're looking for! It probably wont be!

if they don't know you, take your wedding ring off if you wear one (now, now hang on let me finish!) .... say you loved the song and you really want it playing when you propose to your girlfriend or make up some silly story..... they might be more engaged to help find the song....
