I am sure the lyrics are too clear to be the right song, but during my search I'm listening to lots of interesting songs I've not heard before.

Just wondered if you'd considered Mumford and Sons. Not too sure about every word in every song but they are a bit rocky, (but not too rocky) and also fit well into the early 2000 sort of era.

Another few suggestions could be... (names of groups/singers)
    Train
    Keane
    Graham Coxen
    Ryan Adams
    Noah and the Whales
    Elbow
    Snow Patrol
    Maximo Park

Maybe listen to one or two of the popular songs and see if the voice matches but bare in mind a group can change style over the years and if they have written songs created in the '90s they'll be getting on for 20 years old now.

And depending on where you heard it, try looking at the top 40 charts at that time to see if anything was out there at the time.

Like I said, literally the only bit I could pin down was the "son son" bit in between each section...too bad that I seem to have misinterpreted that, too. :(

I really feel the key is in that the vocals are just a little bit quieter than usual, with quite an emphasis on the rolling melody of the song instead....
OK, guess 3... Richard Hawley Don't Stare At The Sun - he's been getting a lot of airplay this year.

Probably not it either! It's difficult to guess because on the one hand you're saying the song is like Knocking On Heavens Door/House Of The Rising Sun (songs I'd class as slow rock, easy listening) with a quiet vocal and on the other hand you're saying it's "more rocky" (which I'm guessing means faster, louder, hard rock?)

It will be interesting to hear what the song is when you finally find it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate I'm not being overly clear - I'm really trying, I promise. :)

The melody of the song is along the lines of house of the rising sun / knocking on heavens door...so if I were do hum it, I'm thinking "dum diddy dum diddy dum dum dum" - and I guess in that regard, I view the song as being a little folky in it's construction...as I said before, it's the tune of the song you remember (or don't remember, as the case may be :wall:) rather than the lyrics.

Having said that, the song itself is not acoustic, doesn't include violins etc (that I can recall), it's a modern rock/pop sound, guitars, drums and bass, with quiet understated vocals. It's not a metally rock sound, there's no distortion or shouting and it's not mellow/easy listening. It's not *so* happy as to have you bouncing around, but happy enough that you go away humming it with a smile on your face.

To extend the dum diddy a little (and, again, I'm not taking the mick, honest!), I think the song's construction is something like:
"dum diddy dum diddy dum dum dum,
dum diddy dum diddy dum dum da,
dum diddy dum diddy dum dum dum,
dum diddy dum diddy dum dum dee...
    (son! son!)
    dum diddy..."

Now, if I could only work out what order the dums and diddy's were supposed to be in, I'd really be on to something....

thanks for saying "when" not "if" in your last sentence, by the way - it's reassuring to think that, at some point, the pain will go away ;)

Yes, I did consider them, on the basis they're quite popular, but I've never heard much of their stuff...so I had a listen and I don't think it's them...their sound is a little more "traditional", I think, whereas I'm after something a little more clean and modern. I think.

Thanks for the other suggestions, too...I've had a listen through them and don't think it's anyone there.

Like I said, I had the impression it was someone really quite famous had done it...but I can't quite put my finger on who...My mind keeps turning to Eminem, but as I said before, it's not rappy...and part of me thinks the lyrics might be a little like the streets or arctic monkeys - kinda unashamedly British - although I've honestly no idea what I think that...and the vocals are far too understated for either, no obvious British accent...gah!

I'm really looking forward to finding out what this is and telling you all so you can all go "that song's NOTHING like what you described!" :)

Have you looked at Nirvana's lesser-known stuff? "Son of a gun" springs to mind - they seem a likely candidate to end up in the sort of playlist you described.
