If it sounds like Knockin' on Heaven's Door, then it could be Helpless by Neil Young - similar chord progression, repeating melodic phrasing.......
Blue, blue windows behind the stars,
Yellow moon on the rise,
Big birds flying across the sky,
Throwing shadows on our eyes.
ETA: There's an Arcade Fire version, and they have a rockish sound....and that would explain the old and new feel to it.....
.....and a Nazareth version.....
......and Black Label Society.....I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I have a question: When you heard it, did you think that you were hearing it for the first ever time? Based on the breadth of your music listening experience, could it be something obscure?
No, I definitely wasn't hearing it for the first time...Like I said, I heard it and thought "ah, I know something about this..."...so I'd definitely heard it at least once before.
My gut says it isn't obscure. I've got a pretty good musical knowledge - and a particularly good knowledge of rock songs from around the 90s/00s, so I'd have probably known it if it was something that fit 100% in with the rest of the songs playing. I remember asking my friend about it, though...and if I thought it was anyone obscure, I wouldn't have done - he's got much less musical knowledge than I do...0 -
If it was a bunch of old school rock tracks together, it may have been Planet Rock's "Rock Block" where listeners send in a selection of their favourite tracks to be played back to back. If so, it may be worth getting in touch with Planet Rock to ask them? (All "if's" and "maybe's" I'm afraid!)
Nah, like I say, 99% sure now it was iPod.
I've spent quite a while on the internet researching compilation albums and can't find one with the same combination of tracks on...so I think that rules the CD option out, too.0 -

Got quite excited by that one...Just the kinda person I'm after...When I heard it, I felt like I wanted to say "oh, isn't this the new song by..." and I think Liam Gallagher's around the right level of famousness...but sadly, that's not the right song0 -
Biffy Clyro - Know Your Quarry?
You could try looking at a list of artists the producer Chris Sheldon has been involved with - he's done a lot of stuff with Skunk Anansie, Foo Fighters and suchlike, so the sound could be his signature.
Other than that, try looking more along My Chemical Romance, etc.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I heard a Kaiser Chiefs (I think, they did Ruby Ruby Ruby didn't they?) song yesterday that reminded me of this thread but I dunno what song it was.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209
