Ah, OK, so I tracked down the advert that has the bits that I think sound a little like the "son sons" we're looking for...It's the Natwest Album, featuring Will Young's "Grace"...

Around 1:20 ish you can hear the "ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh" bits...if you imagine them singing "su-un, su-un" instead, that's how I'm remembering it...

...and just to rule out another suggestion, it's not linkin park - shadow of the day, either. I've been humming riffs around knocking on heavens door into soundhound and it came up with that - was all excited when I saw it had "sun" in the lyrics quite a lot...But alas, another strike.
  • Did you listen to noah and the whale's five years time? can't see a repsonse
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p
  • If it's not, can you pretend it is so we can all get some sleep ;)

Yeah, I did - and no dice.

    A bit too light/jolly...And a couple too many "sun"s.

The song we're after isn't so overtly jolly...Again, I'd liken it to seven nation army...you just end up kinda smiling and humming the thing..it's not that the song itself is particularly light and cheery...

Rest assured, I'm trying every suggestion I get! :)

How does it compare to something like ''i'd love to change the world'' by ''10 years later''.
That has touch of the ''house of the rising sun''s to it....

It's a much more modern sound than that...the 10 years later track has quite an authentic/traditional rock sound, whereas the song we're after's a lot more modern, clean, pop-rock sound...a much more produced sound...The house of the rising sun / knocking on heavens door bit is really just the melody, or the bass line...when you hum it, it sounds something similar to those...but not too much so. Like I said, at the time, when the guy said "it sounds like knocking on heavens door" I thought "no it doesn't!"...but that's all I've got to go off for a starting point now...and it's really just humming variations of that and house of the rising sun that get me anywhere close to remembering....

black hole sun - sound garden

this is gonna bug me nearly as much as you....well....maybe not that bad. But still....

edit: reading the opening post again, it's clearly not that.
The way you describe the way he 'sings' might be the best clue so far to help narrow it down (

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too...

I don't think it's that he's particularly incoherent in what he's saying, I think it's just that the "volume" of the vocals is a lot lower than on most songs...just gives a very understated effect.

I've still got the feeling (despite the company it was keeping on the night) that it's quite a new song and by someone pretty famous...I just recall thinking "ah, this is the new song by...oh, who's it by...it'll come to me in a minute..." - I think it was only later that I got a bit more uncertain about whether it was actually newish....

Doesn't really fit, but what about White Town's Your Woman. Don't think it's got any "sun"s in it, but it is a song where the tune is more relevant than the words.
