Does anyone remember "love thy Neighbour" and "Alf Garnet".

that was prime time comedy and would now have lefties and normal people exploding. :rotfl:

    YET

Citizen Khan on the BBC has used the same stereotypes and the same old jokes and despite initial " OMG's" was quite entertaining.

It makes me have some hope that the rigid and inflexible won't burble "racism BNP or fundamentalists" refuse to countenance any exploration of differences, and join in a British tradition.

    Laugh at our idiosyncrasies :cool::cool:

Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

I wonder if this first-timer, confronted with the actual reality of a stranger physically moving into their home, has been having some second thoughts and here is their get-out clause.

I reckon that is pretty much the case hence my comment about them wanting to find a problem that didn't exist.

Oh come on, the old refuge of the internet argument
    - cut and paste a dictionary
    - criticise grammar and spelling

it's the internet and common to find " stream of consciousness" posts.

Try a little harder. Even though you have changed my original post ( insertion in red) you are not disagreeing with, and have reinforced, what I have said, about racism as a term.

Says the person who tried the old chestnut of claiming I had not read their post! :rotfl:

  • It was probably not wise to call this thread "Evicting a racist lodger". The question is simply how to evict a lodger. What offends one person may be considered tame to another.

Internet threads can get bloody self righteous at time.

The owner of a property and their lodger form a contract, in the absence of anything written the law would require reasonable notice to be given for the termination of that contract. I would expect this to be at least a week, but on the circumstances could be a month or longer.

Maybe the lodger deserves to be evicted but I would think it is a lot less painful for both sides to just agree it has not worked out and give them time to find somewhere else.

To be fair, a B&B etc. is probably more expensive than the lodgings else the lodger would have gone there first. I am sure they would rather not intrude in someones home.

Just curious, did you find the David Jason joke offensive? The one that was in the article fivetide posted.

As you seem to be incapable of working it out for yourself, here's a simple test for you. Ask yourself this: would you tell that joke in front of a room full of Pakistani people?

Ahh, I didn't think it would take long before one of you wheeled out the well-worn "We were allowed to be racist years ago" defence.

    Lame.

So is your answer yes? You are offended?

Would you tell this joke in front of a room full of scots:

What do you call a Scotsman that's nearly home?

Took longer than it did for the usual "if you dont agree with me, then your a racist" line from you.

So if you're not offended but wouldn't say it in a room with Pakistani people, then surely you can see the lodger's argument? Maybe she said something mild that most people wouldn't find offensive but wouldn't say it in front of someone who would definitely be offended by said comment (e.g. a Pakistani in the above example). A lot of people are like this, doesn't make them racist.

It's not that we were "allowed" to be racist. It was a very different society back then. Britain is a lot more multicultural now than it was 40 years ago. The difference then was that there were less people to offend with tongue-in-cheek comments. As there are more immigrants in the UK their voices are being heard much more...hence why kids aren't allowed to sing "baa baa black sheep" anymore, or towns have to take down their Christmas lights. It is madness and it is PC gone mad!
