Trial by mob never works out well for the accused, not then, not now.
Said, without even a hint of irony..."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0 -

Just curious, did you find the David Jason joke offensive? The one that was in the article fivetide posted.0 -

Such as BiteMeBankers would find the term 'Linea Nigra' to be offensive and racist and if he knew it was a term used daily in hospitals would no doubt be demanding it is changed immediately lest it offend someone....we dont know who, but someone is bound to be offended somewhere. BiteMeBanker will no doubt leap to their defence forthwith.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

wow, i only read th op post and a couple comments under it - seems a little over the top, i dont know what was said, we all have ourown opinions and thoughts, Op -you dont have to be best pals wit hthe lodger - but i assume they are not dressing up in white sheets and rising horses at night with flaming torches asking for all the blacks to be hung? (i.e. your lodge is not a member of the KKK?) just tell her you dont appreciate those sort of comments and dont want to hear such stuff, this is a warning. etc, then get on with your life. ... simpler then evicting...0

The big question is whether or not the seagull joke is offensive. It is no different!
Agreed, bitemebankers seems to be avoiding the question. If bitemebankers head their way, Scottish, Englishmen and Irishmen jokes would be banned. if you cannot tell the difference between that kind of joke and racism, then there is no sensible argument can come from it.0 -
Moving on from my point about double standards (a couple of pages ago) which I stand by. It also seems the term "justify" is being mis-used by some.
I honestly do not see any one poster in this thread condoning or justifying "racism" or any other offensive behaviour in any way what so ever.
Indeed some have gone to pains to offer reasoned arguments with balance and logic whilst taking time under perspectives other than their owns.
One or two have taken inflexible positions, yet failed to reason instead offering poorly thought conclusions. Which is in itself is dangerous because even the most honourably held views can be shown to be flawed.
The David Jason joke is quite an interesting example. Clearly it wasn't the best though out joke ever and it's probably in poor taste, I imagine with hindsight David Jason regrets it very much. But on the grand scale of things far worse things have been said. I also imagine that any reasonable Muslim would have taken it as it had been intended, probably brush it off and offer a tongue in check retort about stiff upper lips or queues or anything else that could be used to poke fun at the stereotypical view of an Englishman.
It's called banter, you'll find it all around you. It doesn't make a person evil, racist or nasty or anything of the sort. It also not a justification.
If people can not come to terms which such concepts then perhaps their communication skills are lacking.:www: Progress Report :www:

Am much more interested in finding out what happened with the OP and her lodger than reading through 3 pages of "debate" of the sort one would hear on Jeremy Kyle.
So, OP - any update?0 -

Well said :T
I would like someone to explain to me what was offensive about david jasons joke? It rhymes with pakistani name. Why is that offensive? I dont see anywhere in the joke that he is implying pakistani ppl only work in jobs like cloakroom attendants. Its disgusting that people are too scared to tell jokes like that.0 -

agree.
our media culture sometimes (often) seems like a competition to see who can be the most publicly indignant or horrified over the least possible offense.0
