I've sent a 'nice' request for £254 charges to Abbey on behalf of my son. I gave them 14 days to reply. They sent standard letter....looking into it...blah blah....
Just before the deadline, a letter came saying basically that its not the first time he's been charged for not having enough money in the account (duh!!) and that they've made their t&c clear and easy to understand and therefore won't be paying charges back.

So I ignored that and sent a 14 day letter threatening court action if they dont pay up....Roll on 30th Nov :rotfl:
They suspended the account and sent it to a debt collector last year. I've also told the debt collectors to go talk to Abbey as its in dispute. :D
    ;) debt free...yippee

Shouldn't your son be doing that. After all, he had the fun of spending the money.
  • Hello,

Ive sent a letter before action to the abbey in an attempt tp claim money back from two accounts I have with them.

Yesterday, I received a letter stating that they would refund 70 pounds back to one account (they owe me approximately 700 pounds in fees) and nothing to my other one as they have previously refunded 285 in fees (this is out of 984 pounds thay have taken in fees)

    What should I do next?

    Many thanks

Once the 14 days is up, file your claim. Unless of course you're going to accept what they've paid.

Yes, this is a standard SHAbbey stalling tactic.

You need to send this letter HERE to make them aware u are pursuing the rest of the money, then the LBA 14 days after the prelim letter.

Abbey tend not to pay up until the later stages.

  • Hia,

Claiming bank charges off 2 accounts. Had reply from the Abbey today: they will refund 70 pounds of 700 in fees and 0 pounds of 900 fees. They state that because they have already refunded 245 in fees (which was their fault) that they wont pay anymore back.

    What should I do now?

    Many thanks
  • Hi everyone

This is my first time on your site. I am ready to claim back hundreds of pounds back from Abbey. I have found the letters, but where would I find the spreadsheet for the charges which I need to send back to the bank?

Also having read through the success stories I haven't seen many for Abbey Bank. Have people not been very successful with them?

Your comments would be greatly received.

    Thanks
  • Hey all, I have requested twice now my statements from Abbey by telephone.

I called to check their progress this morning and it is being processed as we speak. - or type. ahem

my current situation is that i am not the most successful budgeter and have, over the last few years accrued quite a few charges.
at the moment, due to a period of illness last year, an Abbey accout which is in debt management. I have another account with NATWEST which i use for normal banking.

my first question is: Given tthe account status (and the fact that i see paying off the £1200 overdraft in a hurry as pointless if i want to make a claim) can i still make a claim?

i have no ideaof the charges and imagine them to be upto 3.5-4K in the last 6 years.

my second query has to do with good will gestures from the bank.
Nat West told me as a good will gesture that they would refund £19 of a £38 charge which would cause me to dismiss any further claim as a result. is this true????
i have had a number of charges refunded by abbey in cases where i had a few in a month. does this mean that i cant make a claim??

if i cnt, thereis nothing good will about it. i did not know that i was supposed to give up any right to that money they charged, they are simply exploiting the law to guarantee a profit.

btw, i think this is a grreat site. and i will be happy to donate should i get all the way through to a total settlement

    have a good day

  • hi
regarding not being able to claim ..i would ignore that and claim ! i also had refunded charges but i still have a claim thats ongoing with abbey . BUT
be careful as i too was worried about our o/d on two of our 3accounts with abbey . .. i managed to open a/l accounts (INCASE THEY CLOSED OURS )but not with matching o/d so abit stuck as to how to pay back the o/d by the expiry date ,which i never new overdrafts had an expiry date
re... my claim details read on ....
i've recently sent letter asking for list of charges .. about a week later i got letter from abbey stating my overdraft of £900 is expiring jan 07 and won't be renewed for same amount .. just £500...!
but then this morning i received statments from the 3 accounts but only going back to last year .... and none of them detailing the charges on front page ... i will have to carefully check each statment for the charges ,i'm sure this is done to put me off ! .... also they sent letter stating statements arcived but will be forwarded on to me within 7 days dating back to 2000.
the amount of charges at present is £400 which will at least pay some of the o/d off ..
