It has to be serviced either by mileage or every year +/- a little bit of wiggle room each way from the date of registration.

This can be done by a KIA main agent or a 3rd party using genuine KIA parts.

OEM parts... they don't have to be in KIA boxes but they do have to be the same parts KIA puts in their boxes.
Its worth comparing prices as having a full KIA main agent history will get you more goodwill in the event of a claim.

Good advice. We have a KIA and, at service time, ring round several dealers and haggle. So far, main dealer servicing hasn't cost any more than reputable independents were quoting.

The 5/7 year warranties are definitely desirable. The point is that thanks to their long warranty their perceived quality is high. But when you look at reliability reports (JD Power, TUV, etc.) their quality only matches your average Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall.

I'm afraid you need to re read those surveys Citroen, peugeot and Vauxhall are way lower in the ratings than kia.

I do read them thoroughly, it's part of my job.

Kia/Hyundai long term reliability scores are average - the reason why they are average is because their newest models have excellent build quality, while some of their older models are rubbish and drag their reliability stats down.

There is no doubt that their latest stuff (eg. Cee'd) is quite brilliant - not the most exciting cars to drive, but bulletproof.

  • My 2009, 70000 miles Kia Cee'd has wiped the floor with my previous Skoda Octavia in terms or reliability.

To be fair to the Skoda it did not actually break down or strand me in the middle of nowhere. It always got me to where I wanted to go but in 7 years and 84000 miles I had to have a total of 6 new coil packs. It got to the point that everytime it went wrong I took it to the dealer and told them what was wrong.

Think you have got it spot on there. Some of their older stuff is dire but they started to get their act together in 2006 when they introduced the first generation cee'd (The first kia with a 7 year warranty) and one of the first Kia's designed by someone who had any idea of what a car should look like. It is no beauty but you don't feel that your eyes have been offended when you look at one. I have done 70000 miles in just under 4 years with very few problems.

This is no coincidence - their recent models are actually German engineered.

Around 2003/2004 GM Opel/Vauxhall and Ford Europe (both based in Germany) started their corporate restructuring - hundreds of engineers were fired to save money, and most of them actually ended up at Kia Motors Europe, working mainly on engineering validation for Kia and Hyundai cars. They have a number of small offices scattered around Rüsselsheim and Frankfurt.

It got to the point that Kia actually setup their greenfield R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, only a few blocks away from GM Opel (Vauxhall). For the first few years their address was Adam Opel Strasse, Rüsselsheim - now they have their own street, Hyundai Platz. It was quite hilarious for a while - I used to work with a number of their GM engineers on different projects, and then I would call the Opel office and ask for someone, and they would say "he/she is at Adam Opel Strasse now", meaning he/she got fired and is working for Kia now.

Anyway, Kia/Hyundai are most certainly stirring the market up.

I have just bought a year old Cee'd with 13,000 miles and it came with a 7year warranty from the date I bought it. They did say I could get it serviced by my regular man as long as Kia spares were used. I don't like it as much as my old Fiat Stilo Multiwagon, which was a brilliant load carrier.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

My son in the US bought a new Ford truck with a ten year warranty. Why is Europe so far behind?

Er most basic US warranties are 3 year 36,000 miles.
