Dacouch, thank you very much for that info.
Ok so the only legal way is to get Insurance in my brothers name (temporary cover) to have the vehicle released.
Now, what are your thoughts on this:
Can we get a quote online for cover (as you would in any normal scenario), making sure that whoever the Insurer is, does have a clause in their policy to cover the release of a seized vehicle in a compound. This quote would be ran to pay on a monthly basis as opposed to an one-off annual payment.
Once cover is approved, we take the certificate of motor insurance and release the car. Once released, we cancel the policy within the cool-off period, thus paying for only the days the car was used and recovering some, if not all of the deposit?
Surely, this is doable and does not violate any conditions of obtaining an insurance policy?
When attempting to do the above with Privilege Insurance (someone who does cover seized cars providing the vehicle is owned by the policyholder), I made the mistake of telling them I only needed a 30 day cover after which, I was fobbed off with "no we don't do that, please look for temporary cover bye bye".
The next few quotes I get, I am not going to mention the seizure as I don't think I'm legally obliged to do so as part of the quotation process. A seizure is not a considered a past claim nor a conviction as details of any fines, points etc. are unknown at this stage of this particular case.0 -
You dont need to mention it unless asked, But how upset will you be when the policy turns up and excludes getting a car out of the pound?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

It's do able, he needs to check the Insurer and / or Brokers cancellation charges as some will make no charge others will charge for the cover provided plus £50 admin fee.
Be aware that if there's an accident before he cancels, then he will almost certainly be liable for the entire annual premium.
Don't be tempted to take any add ons eg legal and breakdown etc as sometimes these are not refundable.0 -
Cheers to you both!
I will check out the following prior to proceeding:
1. Policy wording regarding seized vehicles.
2. Cool off period details; cancellation charges, deposits, etc.
Have a great evening guys, its time for me to head over to MoneySupermarket0 -
Actually one more question - does he himself have to be the policyholder or can the main driver be say, my mum with him as the named driver?0

Dacouch or anyone for that matter, how do you interpret the following:
8 Recovery of seized cars
We will not cover securing the release of a motor car, other than
your car, which has been seized by, or on behalf of, any government
or public authority.
I italicised and made red "your car" as it is bold in the original document.
My interpretation of this clause is that, if my brother goes with these guys, they will cover the release of his seized vehicle.
Am I wrong in thinking that?
This clause was listed under the "GENERAL EXCEPTIONS" section of the policy.
Thanks!0 -

As it's in bold, you will find a part of the wording that says "Meaning of words" which will explain what they define as your car. It's almost certainly the vehicle specified on the certificate eg the car you insure. They may well also define who they accept as "owners" of the car under this description0 -
Sounds like that you are correct.
This seems to have been an awfully expensive and time consuming way to avoid getting his own car insurance.
Only good thing is that an IN offence code on his licence will punish him through insurance premiums far more than any court can.0
