Getting Car Out Of Police Compound

Options
Brother has a car which is fully insured under his bosses business policy.

All other car documentation including tax information is under his name.

His car was stopped and when a check was made, the details didnt match - his name was on most documentation and his insurance details were registered to the business name.

The car was impounded.

Now, the police are saying he needs to go out and buy a 1 month policy to release his car. Is that correct? Is there any other way to have the car released without further expenditure?

  • So was his use of the car covered by the business insurance?? Maybe your brother needs a letter from the insurance company to say he was covered by the insurance policy at the time he was stopped by the police?
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • Is his car listed on the fleet policy?
  • He went down with the owner today and the police turned them away and said he needs to have 30 days cover or some crap like that.

The owner produced the correct docs showing he was covered.
  • Think something funny going on here. If the owner of the business can prove he is registered on their policy then there shouldnt be a problem. Something really funky going on.

Ill find out more and repost.
  • Ok so this is whats happening.

The police are saying that in order for the car to be released from the compound, the vehicle must be registered to the name of the business.

At the moment, the vehicle is registered to my brother and the insurance is registered under a business policy that my brother is listed as part of.

So to cut a long story short, they are saying the vehicle must be owned and registered to the business.

Is that true or they fking him about?
  • What is the extent of the business cover?

So it's insured on the business fleet, with the V5 in your brother's name?

That's not out of the way in itself as the registerred keeper is the person who's normally responsible for the vehicle.

But if the insurance have been told that the registerred keeper is someone other than your brother, then that's the problem.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

  • Well I spoke to the compound and they said basically if the vehicle is in his name, the insurance has to be in his name.

It cannot be in his name and be under a traders policy. He also cannot change registered keepers whilst the car is in the compound.

He has to have cover in his name.
  • Give us the full story or get your brother to post.

If he was delivering pizzas then he needs his own policy too.

You mentioned "trader's policy" ... is he, say, a mechanic at a garage, using the garage's insurance to drive his own car?

Can you put some context into your question so we can get our head round it properly.
