No shortages in the medical profession now? Good. It's changed days. I still have no objections to people coming from abroad to work.
There haven't been shortages in the medical professions for 6 or 7 years. Have you any idea how many unemployed junior doctors, nurses, midwives and physiotherapists there are?
(If we don't pay people benefits, how are we keeping them?)0 -

Me and my OH are a young couple that have seen first hand both sides of the fence.
My partner works on average 30 - 40 hours a week with a unreliable employer. His weekly (Work) is never guaranteed and can cut quickly with a phone call.
He’s been looking for another job for a year. He’s not being picky, Just looking for something that would cover the roof over our heads. So far, He’s not received one interview.
Me, I managed to get a job with a leading supermarker, Started with x amount of hours, Then the cuts come and my hours dropped to 3 hours per week. I was coming home with £70 per month.
Now, We’ve no choice to claim a small amount of housing benefit just to keep our home over our heads, Yet with this being cut, Its looking like, Unless we win the lotto - We could soon well be homeless. We’re not entitled to anymore benefits & even tax credits have told us our income was too high from what the government states.
Its ok for those people who are high earners to complain about people being on benefits and not working, However, There isn’t any work about unless you can afford to live / eat / travel / keep warm on a very basic wage.
I trully don't think people look down on every one claiming benefits. Many cases are totally justified and the reason why benefits were set up for in the first place. From what you are describing, I would say that you are the exact sort of people who should be able to claim benefit temporarly until you can make up your hours again.
In regards to your partner, if he has been looking for a job over 12 months without being called to one interview, than clearly he is doing something wrong. Whether he is applying for jobs he has little chance to get, or his CV is lacking in one way or the other, or he has only been applying to a few jobs in that period, something isn't right that he hasn't been invited to at least one interview.0 -

There is definitely a serious shortage of medical and therapy staff in the South East which is causing quite some problems.0 -

According to that search I did, which I believe was for people coming into the country to work there is still a shortage of certain fields. I'll try and find it again and post it. After I've cooked dinner and had dd to docs.
Well where are the illegal immigrants? Are they just walking the streets or are they housed somewhere? I believe it's the same for those seeking asylum. Someone must be keeping them or have they come here to starve? Yes some will get sponsors. But don't we have holding centers now for them?4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0 -
Also, we don't actually have any shortages in the medical professions, what we do have a great shortage of jobs in these areas, which is exactly the opposite.

I'm afraid you're wrong, 20% of new midwives are unemployed every year.0 -
but if they can fill with locum and agency workers then the issue is that they can "advertise" the position - probably due to budgeting and therefore need to use locum's (which costs more)? I think any permanant post would be snapped up.
It's the same everywhere - people are using zero hour contract, agencies etc. A permanent post is like gold dust even when demands dictates the need.0 -
Health visitors was an obvious one, then they had a recruitment drive and it's now competitive again.0
