I wasn't, unless looking for a chippy warrants being pulled over?

I wasn't! I was driving in a normal safe manner. I could hardly floor it when being following by my partner in a 1.3!

Although if it's because of a misunderstanding such as you've bought insurance but it's not on the database yet, there's absolutely no reason to be anything but completely polite and honest. If they're not, there's always the IPCC.

They don't see it like that. Their computer says nono and thats it in their eyes, you're guiltier than sin itself. The moment their little computer says you're uninsured thats a mark on the scoreboard for them and thats it. Very hard to convince them of anything otherwise at 12:15am when they can't even ring the insurers to check. By 12:35 the plod who tugged me had had enough of me and decided to ring the MIB and my insurers the next day. That and I pointed out he didn't have reasonable grounds to suspect me of a crime and arrest me due to the known "upto 48 hours to update the MID" thing :D
  • Been an awful long time since my last roadside conversation with the police, I used to and would now get out of the car and move to the pavement to chat to the officer, it is not only safer for me but also for the police officer as well no real need for them to be stood in the road or at least close to the edge of the road.

I always found politeness and courtesy went a long way they are only doing a job at the end of the day.

Why apologise if you haven't done anything wrong

If you've been pulled over, the Plod clearly thinks you've done something wrong so suck-a$$ is the way to go.

No because that is essentially admitting something.

how do you know what they have stopped you for?

Be polite, a simple 'can I help you officer?' should suffice.

  • Stay in the car unless requested otherwise (or obviously unsafe - i.e. it's on fire !).

As a general rule I have found that a bit of respect and courtesy engenders the same in return.

Even the Chief Constables look younger these days - or am I getting even older ?

    I was pulled over once.
Stayed in the car. Gave the guy my details.
Details almost matched someone on their database, so he abruptly said "right, into the back of the car".
Didn't know the protocall (sic) for these things so got out of my 3-door Fiat Uno and lifted the driver's seat forward to get into the back. Was stopped quick-smart. I wonder what he thought I was going to get out of the car!

It only then dawned on me that he meant for me to get in the back of _his_ car...

    No it isn't.

I got stopped in a car I had bought only days before, when I got out my GF said it was obvious they were expecting someone else. They said my brakelights had not come on at the roundabout, I said would you like to check them now with the engine off, they were working last night? They worked, I said maybe a loose connection I will get it checked, they waved me off.

I wonder who they were expecting to be in the car.
No loose connection, and I honestly couldn't remember whether I used the brakes at the roundabout because it doesn't have great visiblity to the right I do tend to use the gears to slow down coming up to it.

    Easily done...

"Hello officer, sorry I was speeding, I'm in a rush to get home you see and...."

"Ok well I'm going to give you a ticket for exceeding the limit then. By the way, I stopped you becasue your brake light was out."
