You've totally missed the point! The fact is everyone with MH problems is different. Would you say to someone that is in a hospice dying of breast cancer "well my sister got through it, she fought through it and didn't give up and didn't let it win"?
There is so much ignorance about mental illness, it's so frustrating.
I would never use the metaphor of fighting and battles for cancer, it's totally inappropriate.
There's so much ignorance about people working with mental illness or even (heaven forbid!) recovering from it that it is indeed frustrating. I admire people who survive and think we should look up to them and not disparage them.0 -

Yes and i put down a tiny bit of MY experience, and i am not ignorant of mental illness if truth be told i most probably know more about it than alot of people on here i've suffered since i was 7 years old, something im not going to discuss on this forum but i am entitled to put my little tale on here just like everyone else.0 -

20+ years is an anwful long time to be languising on the sick, getting money year in year out without ever doing anyting about at least trying to get better.
But that also is often symptomatic... the idea that people desire or want to get better following established norms of society is not universal... if for example anxiety defines your day and you use avoidance to cope then doing something about your situation might mean things like isolating one's self from people, events, and resisting change... not going out to see a doctor or working. That is something that regular minded people (including a much respected and highly educated person I was re-acquianted with this past weekend demonstrated) often cannot comprehend yet it explains very simply why such people spiral downwards and end up in a sort of self imposed prison sentence with the bars made of neurological patterns of thought. People with MH problems cannot suspend those problems in order to act and think in normal ways to satisfy the ignorance of others... that'll be a source of some frustration to those seeking to help, support or advise... including to people who have reportedly suffered similar problems themselves... refer page 1 to see my frustrations manifest in the post I didn't delete.. #17.
It is no surprise to me that people present to the NHS because they have benefit issues... indeed my (last) psychiatrist effectively admitted that for most of her patients that is their primary concern... and if I contact her again it will be regarding benefits not medicine. I never at any point thought the NHS could help someone like me.. I've little doubt many people are like me in that regard... they don't say things like 'we can fix that' or 'we can help'... it really was more a case of 'what do you want us to do'... which I would think could be quite disconcerting and unimpressive if you'd been rushed into A&E unable to move your legs. I went to the NHS to create a medical trail.. that's what the system demands.. it's not what I desired.
What we can say though is that there aren't the medical facts available here to make judgements on the Op. They're facing a WCA and hopefully it will end up with an accurate result.. whatever that is... that's all that is relevant. Trying to make social and motivation judgements of people over decades of their life from a few posts is something that may meet the emotional needs of others but serves no purpose otherwise."Do not attribute to conspiracy what can adequately be explained by incompetence" - rogerblack0 -
Well we can't all be perfect can we, the world just aint big enough. Some people may not have the strength that others have. Some people due to their upbringing have no self-esteem and have found that trying gets you nowhere, others have bigger everyday life hurdles than others that have left them defeated, some have no family or social support, some have had terrible tragedy and trauma in their lives, we are all different and there but for the Grace of God go I.
Who mentioned being perfect? What was mentioned was taking responsibility for getting well. Seeing a psychiatrist isn't going to do it. Taking medication - though it may ease some of the symptoms isn't going to get rid of the root cause of many people's depression. It is up to the individual. What is annoying is how people whip out the term mental health at the drop of a hat as if that is an explanation in itself for a life on benefits. It isn't. I don't see myself as any stronger or more capable than anyone else. What I refuse to be however is a victim, that crawls back under my duvet every time something that takes me out of my comfort zone happens. You only get one life. You can spend it complaining how life has dealt you a bad hand or you can live it. And I speak as someone who came a hair's breadth from throwing mine away.0 -
Just spoken to adult mental health services and they have not had a referal from my doctor at all, so I am confused because my doctor told me on Friday that she had referred me and asked if I'd heard anything!!??
I feel quite angry at the doctor for telling porkies!!0 -

Maybe it went astray?
Why not ring up the GP and ask her to send it again, rather than calling her a liar.SPC #1813

I have phoned the doctor up and left a message to ask what is happening.
I've also sent ATOS an email asking why did they overbook my appointment, and when will another date be set so I can arrange for someone to attend with me.0 -
Just got an email back from ATOS saying that a new medical date is 15th November!!
I want the assessment to be recorded; where do I write to to ask for this!!??
Am waiting to hear back from my doctor, and I have phoned MIND to ask if someone can go with me as I haven't got a care worker sorted out yet!!0 -

Why can't the same person as was going with you before do it again?
I think it is a bit late on to be asking for recordings.....you didn't for the previous appointment. You seem to be putting as many obstacles in the way as possible.0
