No, sorry. Although I'm sure others will come along that probably can give some good advice. I just do the mundane "try to make sure it's a good breezy day" when washing towels, as they do seem to be softer then.

I am sure someone will come along and suggest vinegar in the washing machine shortly. I havem't tried it myself but have read that it works.

Use the tumble drier for about 10 mins, but don't set the timer for 10 m as that will use the cool down part of the cycle. Set about 30 mins and turn off after 10

Morning! After washing and drying my towels (on the clothes line, I don't have a tumble dryer) they're all stiff and scratchy. It makes no difference how much fabric conditioner I do/don't use. After they've been used a couple of times they soften up, but the first time you use them it's like drying yourself with a cheese grater !!! They are quite old but it seems a shame to demote them to rags as other than being scratchy they're in good condition (and I don't want to have to buy more towels).

Does anyone have the same problem or has found a solution?

When I had a lot of towelling nappies to wsh and no tumble dryer, I'd add a capful of white vinegar to the final rinse. I'd also try to time the washes for when it was likely to rain- leaving them out in the rain gave them an extra rinse and softened them up no end. But what made the most difference was the wind- I live in one of the windier corners of Scotland, so the towels always got a bit more "fluffed up" than if we'd dried them inside.

I think it all depends on the towels. I've got some Asda George 100% cotton towels and some Christy 100% Egyptian cotton towels, they're a similar colour so I wash them all together in the same load. I don't have a tumbler so they're all either dried on the line or airers, when they're dried the Asda ones are a bit scratchy and stiff but the Christy ones are always lovely and soft.

They're washed in the same load with the same soap powder and dried in the same way so it must be the quality of the towels.

  • Hmmm you do know that fabric conditioner stops the towels from absorbing as much water as they should, don't you?

Also....its sometimes worth embracing the scratchy towel....soft towels look luxiourious but I find scratchy ones dry more quickly, and sort of exfoliate too. All my towelks are soft (no effort just ''luck'') and I miss my mother's scratchy ones....
