Malt vinegar doesn't leave a smell and works as well as white vinegar for softening clothes.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

I have had similar complaints from my 2 as well. I have started drying them outside or on airer and then putting them in tumble dryer for 20 mins just to soften them up. Makes a real difference. I reckon one 20 minute use of td not too bad!!0

i always use white vinegar in with mine and i also always pop them on a boil wash this way gives towels and machine a good clean at the same time:xmastree:Is loving life right now,yes I am a soppy fool who believes in the simple things in life :xmastree:0

Line or maiden drying always makes the towels like corrugated cardboard, fabric softener and a few mins in the tumble dryer will sort it.
Having said that I like my towels thin and hard, they dry much better, my DD's like fat fluffy jobbies because they wrap themselves up in them and sit around till dry, I like to wash and go.0 -
many reasons i dont use tumble dryer (even with hemp nappies) or fabric softner/conditioner, but main one being my son has many allergies and one is to washing powders and everything that goes with them (my mum once washed a nappy and it didnt get used till a few days later, he looked like he was chemically burned! and ER agreed.)
Robbiedoggy - wouldnt catch me doing that hehe... i never had a problem with the nappies, not that i rememeber
its just been the past few months that the towels are getting rougher and rougher.
So bad that he cried twice this week when getting dried, and thats with him not having a flare up of excema as alldairy was eliminated for a change.
im going to try the vinegar just now... good to know that malt is ok to use as well, as i always have malt in the house, but run out of white stuff.
Will let u know how we get on.
I even done a pre wash to see if that would help, the first time that buttons ever been pressed on my machine! so much so, the button was really stiff haha
Soda crystals now added to my shopping list, will give it a try as well

I'd get him his own towels, those velour ones with characters on are soft even when line dried they might appease him.. I love scuffy towels you don't need to wash properly as they sand the top 4 layers of skin off it is like a chemical peel without the chemicals!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

yes, i also like hard towels, cannot stand ones with conditioner on them they feel slimy and slippy when using.
i particular like the towels that you find in spain and italy in cheaper hotels or apartments, which are like a thick linen rather than towelling. they dry really well but i couldnt find any in shops over there or here. i really want towells like that0 -
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

update:
the towels feel softer, but are still like cardboard, but thats due to no movement when they are drying.
gave my son a towel and told him to get dried whilst i went down stairs and got hhis ironed clothes and he was complaining as they where to soft now haha... they weren't hotel bouncy soft, just not as rough as before.

I prefer drying my towels in teh tumble dryer as I think they come out softer and fluffier. Even if I dry them mostly outside and only use the dryer at the end they still feel stiff and hard.
I'm trying to economise and use my dryer less - has anyone got any tips to dry towels and keep them soft and fluffy?0
