I prefer to dry my washing on the line but find that the towels are really hard and rough even though I use fabric conditioner. How can I get nice soft fluffy towels without drying them in the dryer?

Thanks

Alison

What I do is dry them on the line and then give them a 5 minute blast on hot in the dryer with a dry flannel with a few drops of conditioner on it, they come out a bit softer after that.

You might be using too much washing powder.

Mind you, I read somewhere that women use all these fancy exfoliators for their skin, but all you need is a towel that has been washed with no softener, when you've had a shower use a rough towel then a bit of body lotion. I've tried it, it works :D

    Hi Troo!
I do this as well. Start at the ankles and rub upwards to stimulate the lymphatic drainage. It's a brilliantly zingy sensation, and I'm sure there's someone, somewhere charging a fortune for the same thing.

  • I know exactly what to do with this! the limescale in the water is causing the stiffness (mens socks too in our house) you need to wash the towels in the machine on your normal cycle but just use a Calgon tablet, no soap at all, and this should soften them up, if they are really bad you might need 2 goes.

Hmmmmm - I've got really hard water and wash my towels with no fabcon (hate the stuff) and line dry them. I then put them on top of the Aga and this seems to soften them. Wonder if a good store in the airing cupboard is all that's needed?

  • I've got very soft water and my towels still go all 'crispy' on the line!

I have quite good water too but my towels and mens socks were stiff as boards until I tried this Calgon trick, I found it in an old Good Housekeeping mag, I was very sceptical until I tried it. There was just the Calgon tablet in the machine but the amount of suds in the drum was remarkable, perhaps the soap residue and limescale react together the crisp things up
  • I'm really interested in this thread as I have had this problem for a while & have bought some new towels which I want to keep soft. Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but what are calgon tablets?

But vinegar is much cheaper than Calgon :D

Actually that's just reminded me of something that happened this weekend LOL! ... son's friend left his uniform here Friday, as they'd come straight from school and changed to go out. So I did the washing as usual at the weekend, using vinegar of course, and when he collected it on Sunday he said it smelt much fresher than his dad's washing!!! :rotfl:

Not sure if son has told him why yet :D
