Making towels soft

Hi, please tell me how much vinegar you use for a washload. Do you put just a small amount in the fab conditioner bit, or tip it in with the last rinse? That means I would have to be on hand for the last rinse. Thanks for any tips with this.0

It is not for towels as I do tumble them at the end of line drying, but white sports socks, Nike mainly, they just go all hard and horrible I suppose I have washed on 60 degrees to try and get them clean, but they don't get any more wear than any other socks the boys wear.0 -
NEVER use conditioner on towels - it leaves a coating which stops them being so absorbent and does little to soften them. Instead, try using white vinegar - the same amount as the conditioner you're no longer using. If they're already hard it takes a good few washes to get the softness back but it will come back. And when you've found out that it works, take yourself down to your nearest Chinese supermarket and buy it by the gallon (or 4 litres) - much cheaper.0

Please read this which I found on the 'Which' Consumer site;
Calgon claims its tablets extend your washing machine's life, but we found no convincing proof that washing machines really do 'live longer with Calgon' when we put it to the test. Which? simulated three years' washing in hard water - with and without Calgon - to see whether limescale deposits from hard water affect the life of your machine. According to Calgon, limescale build-up results in the 'early breakdown of equipment and a shortened overall life.' The logic goes that by softening the water - with Calgon - the limescale and breakdown are prevented. Is Calgon worth it? We didn't see any sign of breakdown in the machines we tested. The element of the machine using Calgon remained shiny and limescale-free, but the thin coating left on the element where Calgon was absent wasn't enough to cause damage. Nor was it enough to be deemed a good investment in the long run, according to our expert who has 17 years' repairs experience. He said: 'I've never met any circumstances where Calgon would have been a good investment. It takes six to eight years in hard water for a machine to require attention due to calcium build-up. 'In this time the consumer could have spent £295 on Calgon [washing three times a week]. For me to unblock and service a machine of this age, it would be £49.20, plus any parts required.' As a result, Which? has submitted a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority, asking it to investigate the claims made in Calgon's adverts.0 -
I just use an ordinary small handful of basic soda crystals along with half the amount of washing powder/liquid and white vinegar and my towels are getting ,like me, a bit long in the tooth, but are fine .
Like Goldilocks final bed , 'not too hard and not too soft but just right ':):)
Wouldn't waste my cash on Calgon or fabric conditioner. A bag of soda crystals can be bought for around 65p and white vinegar 39 half a litre.No Chinese supermarkets near to where I live or I would buy it in bulk0
