Soft 'n' fluffy v stiff 'n' scratchy:confused: We are split 50/50 at Chez MATH. Hence, I condition and tumble half of them and airer dry half of them. My towels are over 15 years old and the airer ones scratch and the tumble ones are still soft.

I like soft and fluffy!;) but to get them I find you need a TD, to save money I 3/4 dry mine over the bannisters, outside or on the airer then finish in the dryer for a nice soft result! as you have no TD I'd say be very generous with the fabric conditioner
    Do what you love :happyhear

I never put conditioner in with my towels as it seems to make them less absorbent.

I tend to dry mine as much as possible outside, then finish them off in the tumbler - but obviously if you haven't got one you can't do that! Other than that it's rough towels really.

As the title says - how can I get fluffy towels without using the tumble drier and without fabric conditioner ?
My towels are all stiff and scratchy, I am tempted to buy new ones but am worried after one wash they will ge horrid too.

    Thanks

Mine have seemed to be softer since I started to give them a really, really good shake before I hang them up. I do use fabric softener though, but maybe you could try using white vinegar instead? A lot of people swear by it and apparently it works just as well as conditioner (and it doesn't make the clothes smell of vinegar lol!).

Haven't checked the older threads, so don't know if this has been mentioned, but if you hang them out on a really windy day the wind 'softens' them beautifully, without fabric conditioner or vinegar.

OH...I love stiff and scratchy towels- I see it as a free exfoliant! I inherit them from my mum as she likes fluffy and they are lovely and hard and crunchy.Sorry, not much use to your particular problem.

I find the secret is using less washing powder/liquid as its the unrinsed detergent which makes them stiff and scratchy but they dry better that way - I have an extra rinse on my 30degree cycle which I use and it seems to help and I use very little detergent liquid.
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j
