English legalese is reasonably straightforward compared to some countries.

Dh spends a lot of time putting this in good plain but grammatically correct English. Legalese seems to some to get around the grammar issue.

For many people with simple affairs, a basic Will should be a simple clear statement of intent.

In this case, I suggest something like "Matriarch Kabayiri wishes to leave everything to her son, provided he purchases either a speedboat or a really posh hifi with the proceeds. Spending it on paying off the leccy bill is not supported, ignoring any protestations from aforementioned son's DW" ;)

Avatar dog didn't understand the pictures. If he heard dogs on the TV he would put his ears up and look very puzzled, and turn his head from side to side, as if wondering why he could hear dogs but not smell any.

Avatar dog would have been the same. When we first got him we tried giving him squeaky toys. He LOVED them, but always managed to kill them within the first minute - once the toy has a hole in it, then biting it no longer makes it squeak.

He killed his frisbee too - he used to worry it a bit each time he retrieved it, and after a while it became so out of shape that it wouldn't skim through the air any more.

The best toy for him was a really thick strong rubber ball that he couldn't destroy - especially if it was on a rope. I can throw a ball on a rope quite well, but without the rope, I'm afraid I throw like a girl. :o

I stopped being expensive at 22, after they paid for my wedding. Then I became expensive again at 34 when LNE got himself sacked and lost the tied house along with the job. They were great, and supportive in so many ways (including financially).

Nowadays I'm back on my feet again. There are only two things I get out of the Bank of Dad (no longer "Mum and" :() these days. One is my mortgage, on which I pay interest, and is a win-win arrangement for both of us, and the other is occasional lump sums that I don't ask for, but are part of his IHT planning.

Actually, I was discussing money with my dad the other day, in the context of a complicated story about some family members and their financial complexities, that I shan't post on here. Anyway, part of the discussion concerned elderly people deciding whether to give lots of money to their kids or hang onto it for themselves. I ended up telling him that when Mum was ill, I liked the feeling that they had enough money to make decisions about what kind of care would be best for her, without worrying about whether they could afford it. I said I also find it reassuring that his money is probably enough that it'll be the same if and when he needs care, and my brothers and I have to make decisions about it. I said that was far more important to me than anything I might or might not inherit.

That's my three quotes for this post.... now to carry on catching up with the thread.......

I initially stopped being expensive to them when I hit about 13 apart from the dancing expenses. I had several part time jobs and bought all of my own clothes, food etc....I was a stubborn and independent mare.

I then refused all help until I was late 30's and even though I use the bank of mum and dad, they are not gifts but loans (apart from when they treat us to meals out etc), I pay every single penny back, albeit quite slowly. Without them, my car would not be able to be MOT'd each year but then they prefer for me to have a running car so I can get to them quickly if needed...and so I don't nick theirs! :rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

My parents never celebrated their anniversaries. Dad'd make a lot of effort to get mum a great card, mum'd get him the first one she saw.... and over the years he'd buy her a present at least until the 20th or so ... she never bought him anything and she was careless/offhand about what he'd bought her.

Come their 50th I wanted them to at least go out for a cup of tea and a scone, siblings weren't interested in making any effort, I said I'd take them out to a small/quiet garden, just so they'd been out ... and a few days before mum came and said to me "I don't want to go anywhere with him... so don't arrange anything". And that was their last one......

We had a party at my parent's house for their 50th, with only family and close friends invited.

Mum is not a party person, dad is a party animal, I think I take after dad :D

Maybe if you try.it the right way round over the weekend before attempting to/ from work? I am definitely going to have to have a trial drive to work when I have.moved. At the moment my commute is walking downstairs, and before that.it was flinging on whatever clothes were.lying on the floor and then sitting on the tube for at least an hour. I think it will be about 10 miles each way, in my own little car :)

Without revealing where you're moving to, I would warn you that -
1)I never saw traffic cops there at all (or many cops at all) and the locals treated the speed limit as a weird foreign transplant that was all right for other people but not for them.
A friend who'd lived abroad for years drove a car in your area without tax and an MOT for years without noticinng it was needed. I'm not suggestinig you try that!:naughty:

    2) Sometimes you get stuck behind farmers driving slowly and surveying their fields which happened quite a lot.

3)yes and the first time a snowflake hits the ground you'll suddenly start noticing huge numbers of cars in ditches.

    Good luck!:D

That might partly explain my insurance quotes!

So, train was supposed to leave at 9.55, we are still sat in the station as some inconsiderate person hit a bridge with their car (though I do hope no-one was hurt). I was supposed to.arrive at my destination at 14.30 :(

Edit - should have posted earlier...as soon as I pressed 'post' they said we were going! Have definitely missed my connection though. I hope the trains are frequent, but I suspect not!
  • Just had a browse of the rest of the site, and despite knowing I really should, I just find it hard to get excited about saving 10p on a tin of beans or whatever.

I'd be well up for putting in the time and effort to save a few hundred quid on a luxury item, but there's usually little attention paid to those categories.

Maybe the site needs a "posh money saving" board? :)

I am really bad at saving money. Groceries I find easiest, because I sort of know what's cheapest or better value at different places, but even that I find hard to be bothered with ATM. My method of saving is mainly doing with out and prioritising. I could have more jewellery like lucky silvercar, instead we are getting curly dog. That's a half decent pair of earings.

In fact ATM, michaels would have apoplexy at everything financial of ours. We need a real financial overhaul and I am just too daunted to face it. I think it will terrify me. We have lived very cheaply in our time, but well, now we seem to live less well and very, very expensively!
  • Am I the only person who only finds it hard to save more money because I don't spend it in the first place, I find Lostinrates post amusing, as they really are seeming to struggle to save ??

I have huge debts (enough for a new Mid range Merc) run up making sure wages were paid, but really saving money is a case of deciding what you need to keep warm, comfortable and fed, any thing else is luxury.

People are shocked when I say I can't be bothered to take a holiday, but if not having one for ten years hasn't worried me yet, I think I can hold on for another couple of years lol, but others worry.

No I don't know why they do either?

Funnily enough I've done the opposite. I could live far more lavishly than I do. I used to Fly business Class on Long haul and other extravagant things like eating in Top London restaurants at well over £100 a head:eek: I actually prefer living a bit more 'frugally' and having the occasional splurge. Just using Quidco has saved me over £1,500 in the last three years.

Cannot remember if I posted this before but I saw an ad recently suggesting that the govt had brought in a new subsidy scheme for air and ground source heat pumps which seemed relevant to LIR
    I think....
