They are "pity replies" - we're taught not to avoid the aflicted, but to treat them as normal people.... so it'd be impolite to not respond.

Here's one for idle searches. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs - free, searchable database of past slave owners. When slavery was abolished, owners were paid huge sums in compensation (where a lot of current toffs got their money from) - and the list has now been made accessible/online.

See if your ancestors benefitted from slave ownership.

Keyed in my family name/s. No results.

Interesting, someone with my daughter's name got a fair old wedge of cash. I think we'll be discussing rent terms and conditions tomorrow.

We've got weather warnings over almost all of Aus tonight. A cyclone in QLD, huge storms for us here in NSW, a tropical storm over WA & SA. VIC only has bush fires to worry about tonight plus our storms.

We should be fine here but spare a thought for the many Aussies that are going to lose most or all of their possessions tonight and tomorrow.

    Grrrr,

I think I might have developed an egg intolerance/allergy. :(. It would explain why every time I start to feel well and have something to eat I set off again. I eat so many eggs as eggs, it will be a real pain, let alone eggs in stuff. Anyway, now I think i have narrowed it down to that I can try an exclusion diet.

Lets hope it is not that.
    I think....

It's ok, he doesn't cover flood in Aus. Anyway, we're a very small market to him, he mainly does the big boys: USA, Germany and Japan (China is protectionist so can't buy).

@viva - hope the Aussie rellies are ok. The Mary River is flooding again.

    Thanks Gen,

Rels will be fine as not as bad this time... but I'm sure they will be busy with the SES/other emergency work.

Three major floods in a couple of years, I wonder whether they will need to look to move the major infrastructure away from the town centre in Maryborough and possibly look at major works on the Bruce Highway. You can't surely have one of the major highways in Australia cut for days/weeks at a time due to flooding. Maybe it is time for an elevated stretch or re-routing. I think you are right in terms of the need to build more Queenslanders etc.

My uncle's Queenslander is not particularly high set, it has about 6 steps up to the front door, but he still lives a good way higher than the river level so should be ok. The problem is that the CBD sits in the river bend, so when the town floods you can't buy food except from the little stores.

I really answer for any of the rest of the 9/10 British non-prayers, but as I am not religious it seems hypocritical offering prayers to any higher beings. I have no problems whatsoever with anyone else believing or praying, and there are plenty of things I hope for and even more that I need 'forgiveness' for, but until I find a religion that I believe in (and I suspect that I won't find an organised religion I believe in - however, I'm not actively seeking one either), I don't 'do' praying :) If I am in a situation where others are praying I do stand respectfully though :)[/

I have a lot of sympathy for this. Fwiw I do feel a gap in my life where 'religion' but more the strong, caring community of religion "should" be and I like to meditate and indeed sort of think things through. I find religious places good for this, when the mi d wanders from purpose then there is more for it to rest on in a beautiful or carefully appointed building than ones own demons, shopping list or whatever. I do not find my village church that good for this purpose here. I do live now, in an area where there is a stronger catholic community and part of me wants to explore that, but it won't happen......I won't enter a community ( as opposed to a building) knowing its not what I believe. Being in it and drifting seems different.

Any way, the long and short of this is that while the nice people are often in my thoughts and well wishes I will especially send warm fuzzy positive thoughts and hopes and wll wishes to the nice land herts stronghold this week for the Michaels family. Even though I haven't a clue why. :).

Yes, I really hope it's not.

I am contemplating doing one of those postal intolerance tests. Not sure how good they really are though. :(. Following my emotional breakup with coffee last year tea has recent ally been told I don't want that kind of relationship either, and I announced a few weeks ago to dh's horror that while I am not ready to say good bye yet I think cheese and I might be over too. We had a couple of beautiful cheeses and I was excited about them and salivating at the thought but the taste in my mouth left me cold ( I won't use the analogy I did with dh, I am sure you can all create one of something you don't want in your mouth) and i was repulsed, I just felt like the cheese and I ha no chemistry any more. It's hit my favourite cheeses the hardest, I have stil had a couple of nibbles of plain old cheddar and a bit of Parmesan, but......I'm really going through the motions with cheese it feels.

I really only want to eat charcoal crackers ATM. But don't have any and cannot get excited about baking some, and was making a low complex carb stab for a Lenten thing.

I am trying to find something warm to drink besides my rosemary twig and slice of lemon in hot water ( which is a day time drink) that I click with. We have dozens of teas etc but ATM, none are clicking with me, and most end up tipped away.

When I have resolved the drink issue I will be very happy. It will be warm soon, hopefully so water will be all I want, and tea and I might have reconciled by next autumn. :)
