Right, that's got your Xmas present sorted then ... now I need to buy for the others.

    QUOTE]

Great. I have not done my Christmas list yet. When I have I will pm you.

Do nice people have Christmas lists? My DD and Mr S do - I don't and they think I am a real pain.

Nope. Dh and I do stockings for each other, but not really big gifts. I got dh a medium sized gift but he knows about it because I had to get him to use pay pal for it.

We will share curly dog as our big gift, and the house of course. (I might just sleep next to the boiler when it's in.)

I HATE surprises, most of my friends know this now and just get me a card, or something they are positive I want. Dh knows me well enough for me to relax and enjoy small surprises. Even nice, happy surprises unsettle me a bit, and while I am please I am also a wee bit unsettled by them, which is weird.

Control freak you see. Dh loves surprises, but gets wildly enthusiastic over anything at all....so it's easy to make his day. :)

Last year we were going through some stuff, so I said "no presents; we'll not buy each other presents as there's so much else going on".... trouble was, I was the only one who got nothing.... sibling/married brought their presents from their friends to open; sibling/single brought along her presents from friends to open ... and on top of that I suddenly remembered a few "stocking filler" type gifts that'd been bought for younger sibling months earlier, as well as a present from mum to youngest that'd been bought 3 months earlier. I sat there and watched them open theirs ... it never occurred to me they'd bring along presents other people had bought them.

Probably not really having a Xmas this year either; certainly expecting no birthday presents and no Xmas presents this year really.

I've just watched the episode of Grand Designs where the 2 guys renovate that water tower in London.

They are just bonkers, but I love it. :D

Thank goodness there are still fantasy architects around.

(I wanted to build a fishtank into one of the taller kitchen cupboards when we put the new kitchen in. I had it all worked out with my local aquarium shop but DW knocked it back .... it wasn't "practical" :( )

I thought the water tower was amazing. Truly stunning.

DD was in single sex independant schools until 6th form when we wanted her to go to co-ed. Paid for out of income as we earned a reasonable amount.

"confession" her prep school was posh - and we only looked at independant schools. She was a day girl as it is only 2 miles from home most of the others were boarders. It was wonderful - for her and for us.

For secondary schools we looked at Bedales - I loved it - they have a farm - but her verdict was she wanted a school "where you call the teachers Mrs somebody", she was a very traditional child, no first name terms for her. We chose somewhere single sex but not a competitive culture - only day girls & 'nice' but not posh at all.

School fees may be the reason we have very modest home. It was our choice.

I found commuting in Versailles and Paris less stressful than sitting in traffic in London, which is saying something when you consider how nuts the Parisians are when it comes to driving. :rotfl:

Nope, give me a rickety train ploughing it's way across the bleak peak, the draughts blowing their way through the cabin. What was that slogan? "Age of the train?" ... yer right.

I suspect competitive driving in Paris is less stressful than random tailbacks on the M25.
A draghty train would probably beat the germ incubators we have with no opening windows or the older ones with windows but overheated and too crowded to get near to open one.
    I think....

I'm not a great receiver of gifts. I think it is because we don't really do them as a family. I really struggle to not be completely ungrateful, but I can be very fussy. I don't like being so ungrateful, which makes me even more grumpy. If someone insists on a gift I prefer small, thoughtful.and silly things.
I do quite like choosing and giving gifts though.

    Herts alert.

There is a water tower in Shenley, that has been converted into "designer apartments" about 4 (?) years ago. 360 degree views, blah, blah. I think they are still on the market.

You certainly give thoughtful gifts. I love, love, love that book. Read it about four times now.

Remember the hosepipe ban earlier this year?

The mus here is just grim. The builders have to wade through it all day long poor things, the dogs trek out through it, which means its through out the house really. Nothing anyone can do but shrug. It's one of those years I guess.
