I've recently upgraded to fibre optic. Using morag's site, I get 46Mbps when wired in (downstairs), at 9pm on a Saturday while DS is simultaneously streaming video over the same internet connection. I only get 11.7Mbps when I do the test upstairs with wireless connection, though. The bloke that installed the upgrade said I might find it was limited by the wireless thing in this aging laptop. If necessary I'll run a cable upstairs so I can be wired upstairs to get decent speed in the interim before this laptop finally bites the dust.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Sue, it's utterly awful that in this country pupils are labelled as disruptive at an age when in other countries they are not even in school. It's a terrible waste of talented kids.

EDIT: It's a terrible thing to do to any child.

Or get a faster USB wireless adapter - something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WG111-Wireless-54Mbps-Adapter/dp/B0002LHX8O

Starting to look at different areas to potentially buy a house in. We can't afford to buy here as even a fairly grotty 3 bed costs £700k. Walked down the river to Teddington today and pottered around there a bit. OH liked it a lot, but train journey to Waterloo is nearly 20 mins longer and only 2 trains an hour instead of the 8 we currently have - don't like that much. The best thing about it was that it isn't under the heathrow flightpath!

A friend of my mothers, now deceased ran a residential school for people with behavioural difficulties (closed on her death). I visited a few times because she lived on site and was always roping people in to visit the school and show normal behaviour around the kids (some of the kids had medical issues, some were no official reason for being 'difficult') and I have to say, it was a really positive environment. There was a really nice biker who did a lot for the school, I am not sure he was not an ex student. I think for some parents 'forced' down a residential route it's a terrible shame if other people's attitude towards the benefits for their children stop them going for it. Of course it's not the right route for everyone, but when it is its a crying shame when it isn't taken.

when I was at school and eating disorders were rife. I remember one girl I was quite close to whose parents fought tooth and nail to not have her admitted as they feared her feeling rejection too. What very few people realised was her mother had an eating disorder too, and my friend was coached on what to say in family therapy to not let indication of this slip, it caused my friend no end of stress. I saw a few years ago the sister was doing well (thank goodness) but looked much the same as her mother used too. I do wonder whether the intervention of time in a different setting might have benefitted her, and my friend. We will never know if her parents were right, because you cannot redo with the same circumstances.

For some, it is the right thing, for us, I still believe it would have been the wrong thing.

Middle son got what he needed by an alternative route that would also keep him in our family unit and as a result, has grown into a well rounded young man, able to cope (ish!) with the outside world.

My cousin's son was taken into a residential unit at the same time, his aggression and violence was less than middle son's. He is still unable to function in the real world and still has major problems with his aggression, is doped up to the eyeballs during the day (something else I refused) and will say that his mum doesn't love him as she sent him away.....it certainly hasn't worked for him.

On the other hand, a friend of the family had to go to a residential unit and it was the best thing that could have happened to him. He came out of there a more confident person, calmer, able to hold down a job and have a life.

I've always looked for an alternative route, it hasn't always made me popular but I firmly believe there is more than one way to deal with issues, educationally and emotionally and I would rather try those out first than go for the first and often more eek but standard ideas.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Yes this is a good site to use and as long as you are happy with the end result and you are able to log onto your chosen sites thats all that counts.

I have a friend who lives in Hull and he like most people in his area use a service called Kingston Communications, I think it is called, and he has untold troubles with his internet connection speed especially trying the log onto MSE he finds it impossible and that is hard to believe, poor fellow.:(

Missing MSE I would not be a happy bunny.;)
I had friends who'd attended Hull Uni and apparently Hull was the only part of mainland Britain who didn't let the Post Office (later BT) takeover their telephone network (there were five others including Glasgow and tunbridge Wells but they got taken over). They always had cream-coloured phone booths instead of the red ones and had a separate phone book.

Would you consider somewhere in the East of London chewy? Alternatively are there any stops on the new cross route (not crossrail the overground one that's been completed) that are reasonable prices and not too far out?

I wouldn't commute with anything less than 4 trains an hour.

The problem is that when trains break down and/or run late, you'll not be loving where you live!

No - I really don't like East London. We don't need to move somewhere that is "vibrant" or "up and coming"! We are going to stay in the SW on a line into Waterloo as OH works in Waterloo and I am likely to always work in either Bank or Canary Wharf.

We just can't quite afford to stay where we are so will probably have to shift a bit further out. Also considering shifting right out so somewhere in the gap between Guildford and Basingstoke. We could afford a 4 bed detached with a garden out there. If I'm going to fork out the best part of three quarters of a million on a house I'd prefer it to be something like that, although OH is not sold on the idea as most of our friends live in clapham or Richmond.

I am currently in negotiations with my BFF to get him to move as well. We haven't found anywhere with two adjoining semi detached houses on the market yet though!!
