I started my home journey in the dark today .... 17:45 in a huge thunder storm :)

I hate the rain/half dark while I am still trying to memorise/learn the different lane changes on the journey home. There's one point that starts as two lanes and ends as four - and I have to be in the furthest left one, so have to make sure I start off in the left, then merge left with each new appearing one .... I like to know what's coming on a road and not suddenly find I'm in the wrong lane, in the dark/rain, with bright headlights and commuter traffic and cyclists all knowing where they're going :)

but at the time it looked like my work was taking off and we would be able to afford it.

DS1 went to a state grammar school that was going to give him the opportunity for very decent results and personal development, and that was free. DS2 would have hated that academic pushy environment but we wanted to ensure he got the best education for him- not just academically but all round. So we looked, we saw a school that suited him, we thought and we made the decision that his education was important enough for us to spend on it. Being quite aware that if we hadn't have been able to afford it we wouldn't have done it, and that he would have done OKish had he gone to the school he would otherwise have gone to.
we were also aware that what prompted us to look around was that DS1 was getting this brilliant education and so we wanted to match the opportunity for DS2.

And the outcome on paper is that they ended up at the same university doing very similar courses, with their A levels being just one grade in one subject apart, but they are very different children and they have been educated (at secondary level) in very different ways. They always were very different children and they still are, though they have certain traits in common, which neither OH or I have.

In terms of private vs state, they both went to state primary, so only one quarter of our children's education has been private.

I'm rejecting the POSH comment, on the grounds that truly posh people only look at private schools.

Doesn't matter if it is or is not posh, you did what you think right for your different children within your capability. I call that responsible rather than posh, personally.

Am I the only one not looking forward to the clock change due shortly?

I can cope with finishing a train journey home in the dark, but when I start the journey home in the dark, well....that's just depressing.

If Scotland go independent can we scrap this clock change malarkey?

I am only just on track from the last clock change and struggling still to stay awake the whole length of my normal day ( I am going back to bed for an hour in the mornings). I don't care so much which time we are on, I just wish they would keep to the same one year round.

An internship you have to pay to do!

Hmm, level playing fields being heavily tilted.

I'm delighted he got the internship!

Many internships are heavily weighted in favour of the offspring of people who can afford to support them. It is simply an extension of private education principles really.

I have been involved in developing internship programmes where they are for graduates, paid minimum wage, intended to give transferable skills in the jobs market but not a path to a gauranteed job. They are either 'local opportunities for local people' or more often opportunities for the hot housed.

Silvercar, a couple of our peers worked in think tanks on graduation. The most astounding of whom was a stonkingly immature grad peer of my sil, sometime ago I guess now, ten years (gulp). BA no masters, and no paid for internship. (and the realisation for us that if these are our thinkers then the tanks need filling up or a better grade of fuel or something)

Have things changed so much in relatively short time that one needs to pay? Gulp.

I don't think any of the NP have the ability to change this.

Lobby your MP and see if he can sort this for you ;)

Personally It would be a bit easier to not have to adjust but I'm not overly bothered by it.

You did exaclty what we did sc, although we felt we had no option with DS as he would have to be carried in if he'd stayed in his state school any longer. Class sizes of about 10 max is what we paid for and he's coping with that. No regrets. Except the lack of moiney, obviously.

Why not have two time zones? We're not China! In the US some cities have suburbs in different time zones and you never hear them moaning it's impossible or too complicated. I'm pretty suire it's not a reserved matter. The sun comes up 18 minutes earlier in London than Edinburgh (which is further west than Bristol IIRC) so it's not clear why we have to be on the same clock. As they say on the TV stations in the US "it's five past the hour"

Your pretty posh considering your did all that while sorting a pad in a nice location. But the main reason your posh is that you can't cook soup! I mean, how posh is that!! :D

    p.s. @PN. Posh or not, she's certainly minted ;)
