And there I was foolishly thinking kids might get a bit cheaper after they turn 21...

Same here, light at the end of the tunnel, hopefully.

As far as our finances go, DS2 has finished private school now, and subsidising him at university is cheaper than private school fees.

An internship you have to pay to do!

Hmm, level playing fields being heavily tilted.

So to take this opportunity you have to have somewhere to live rent free near London, be able to sacrifice claiming unemployment benefit, subsidise yourself while you work (decent clothes/ transport/ laptop & mobile required) as well as day to day living costs. On top of all that you have to pay towards the internship.

If it was marketed as a course, with lots of work experience, where you meet contacts in the area you want to work in and you got a piece of paper at the end of it and support in finding work afterwards, it would sound more acceptable.

If he wanted to work in a field where we knew people, he/ we would network and getting through the door would be easier.

and we paid for his masters and supported him in this last year, so what is another few months?

I'm delighted he got the internship!

you have to pay to do the internship? sounds a bit like a scam...it is a large well known company at least?

we have about 50 interns each summer - they definitely get paid, quite well i think - £1,500 a month or something like that. we could easily fill those slots without offering a salary, i presume the strategy is to try not to just attract people who can afford to work for free as we use it as a screening process for our graduate scheme.

Mrs Generali did an internship with a 'Big 4' accountancy company a couple of years back and got paid about $25/hr. Plenty of people would have paid to get the experience and the shot at a Big 4 job that she had.

Paying for an internship sounds a little dodgy to me.

    Nope!

I'm still expensive and I am 42........the bank of mum and dad is a wonderful thing :rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Very very stressful morning..and all because of some school photos. This time, they decided to upset middle son and it is never a good idea to upset him due to his tendancy to violence.

One of these days, the new school bosses will get the idea of what it means to be aspergic with a horrendous short term memory and a history of violence when overheating....

    Thankfully, we avoided the violence......just.

Edit - And they have just messed up again! Arrggghghhh, I can feel my hair turning grey as we speak! This time at least, it was sorted pretty quickly but it was def not what I needed today.

Oooh, we are now officially overcrowded according to the housing association rules as there are two 16 and over dependent children living here alongside a younger child and myself.

In real life however, nothing has changed, the sky has not fallen and life (and living conditions) are exactly as they were yesterday when we were not officially overcrowded.

Who makes these blooming silly rules?

Sue, how long do incidents like to day stay with middle son emotionally? Will he be distressed about this tonight? The weekend? A few weeks?

Not too long thankfully as he has the memory of a goldfish, unlike youngest who would be stressed for weeks...

This is the child who gets bullied but forgets about it before the day is out (or just plain doesn't recognise he is being bullied, he thinks people are just being nice). Unfortunately, with middle son, it is an instant reaction rather than a build up over days and then react..and that reaction is aggression and violence rather than closing down like youngest. He almost exploded today, he was certainly very close to the point of no return but we managed to avoid it.

    Ok, so that committee thing...

The event would be easy, but for the dyed in the wool stalwarts. They have decided not to stand down, as the only new person was.....ME.

Have you ever heard the joke about how many Oxford dons it takes to change a light bulb?

    The answer is...

cHANGE? (in horrified tone).. Well that's pretty much what happened. I would say a third of peoe were dead set against anything new whatsoever, a thirds were wildly excited to see someone not on a pension there. (ok, exaggerating slightly) and a third were so confused they didn't know what to think.

I also was brave enough to give them some feed back from opinions I have been canvassing, which I think was not new, but was a challenge to the resistant third of the committee.

Anyway, I am on, and I have a year and a budget of zero to suggest some modernisation might work. If it takes off the suggestion was I get my 'own' night in the venue and we take it from a one evening event to a two evening event in a few years.

So I am going to call in some favours from a couple of muso friends and am going to have to pressure people to buy tickets (not cheap for the type of event) if I want to do such a thing in the future......

Lots of food for thoght really. :)

I'm 95% sure it isn't a scam, but there is a 5% niggle in there.

If it isn't a scam then they have a 100% record of finding their trainees graduate jobs at the end of it, so it should be worth the money.

Its a think tank, so not a big company, but that is the area he wants to work in. so :shrugs:
