:) I thought it was up to the employee to get to work, everything at work was fine, all paths clear etc.

Southern rail is ridiculous though, amended train timetable running again today so just off to catch a train!

It is the employees responsibility however when there are weather conditions/fuel shortages that crystalise risks to delivering the business it is in employers interests to take practical steps. Depends how mission critical it is.

We as necessary provide sleeping arrangements, flexible parking for those usually not entitled to park, co-ordinate transport amongst colleagues with 4x4's.

In your case where 2 weeks work was at risk I would have considered looking for a colleague to cover it under your remote supervision or if at all practicable ask a colleague with a 4 x 4 if they agree to pick you up. If this was a goer I would have asked you if you 'wanted' to bring overnight things & a sleeping bag to camp in the 'office' or with a nearby colleague or hotel.

OH has rebooked flights for tomorrow; hmm, here we go again.

I have just loaded the BT smart talk app to my mobile phone. When abroad within wifi you make calls through the app and pay your home phone rate, free in my case.

I wonder if this paves the way for a data only mobile tariff, with every call made through the app?

Last week I installed Viber but our internet speed is sooo slow it would not work when I did a trial run.

It is your responsibility to get to work, and if you can't make it because the trains are not working then you have to take that day as holiday or lose a day's pay. However, if the consequences of not being able to get there are that a fortnight's work is lost, that is a cost the employer has to bear. So, in those circumstances and perhaps more generally, an enlightened employer will try to assist the employee to get to work in cases where they are having genuine difficulty.

When I worked as a coach driver for a major Scottish Company our boss would put on a coach that would call at major junctions and collect as many of us as it was possible for work when conditions were such that we could not make it in our cars, the coach was fitted with snow chains so was quite safe.

He said that it was worth his while to keep as many of his fleet on the road that took workers under contract to their work places.

Not all companies can work it like this I know but we were all grateful.;)

OHs firm still pays people who can't get in. Where they can work from home they are expected to do so. Where people have made extra effort and managed to get into work they are rewarded. Where people are deemed to have been taking the p1ss and taken a snow day when they could have managed to get in, they may be required to use annual leave to cover that day. I don't think anyone has their pay docked.

I must be the 'some posters', I think.

I think I may be in the same universe as you. Some 'businesses' have to run and transport to work (whilst usually the employees own problem) are legitimately on the critical path for major incidents.

During the big M5 'bonfire' crash a few years ago it was said that the emergency helicopters were used to transport Drs & Nurses in to the ED depertments that were receiving casualties as the roads were blocked. Without the right staff there would be no ED.

Some businesses always pick up staff, there are mini buses that collect from the station near here. I would guess they are taking staff to locations not easily reached by public transport or on foot.

    .

I find it highly amusing when I read some of the parallels that are drawn on this Forum about posters also the many words that I have to 'Google' to find out there meanings because some of the words quoted on ie: the Economy I have never encountered before in my life and get so much pleasure of tying to understand what they mean, politicians use them a lot to try and confuse old Cronies like me into believing that they are a new word for a miracle cure, such as Quanative Easing and the likes. Such lovely people they are.;)

I love posts by Generali he is a class act to follow and sounds to be a lovely person (ps keep it quiet)

They used to do that here, but it was cancelled the month before I moved. Not sure how that fits in with any environmental aspirations, but I'm glad I decided to purchase my own transport rather than getting the bus (which I was considering doing for a few months).

    I've been Money Tipped!
Fwiw I have been telling my clients not to come. Makes more work but keeps them safe. I do not charge them for this, but they stay alive to pay me for the agreed arrangements.

I don't see the point in people struggling down here to do not much because 'they should'. I have to, so might aswell do it all.

    LiR is it liveries?

At the yard DD goes to they have charged for extra duties. As we live within 2 miles DD has done more to help out with one she shares and to support a friend.

On Friday the one she shares is going to a new home - she has only been riding this one since about Sept but will be sad to see her go as she does 'give' her all.
