Oh well back to the drawing board.

I think you should go back to the drawing board. I sympathise with your mum being frail. My mum is quite frail and would not like that bus trip. She probably really wants you to collect her to be honest.

You know, I think I would find the bus hard, They are less comfortable than trains in some ways (though better in others) and it can be hard to 'dismount' from a coach if you are creaky and frail. (dh and I used to debate this every time we arrived in city centre and he wanted to get the bus in and I wanted the train, if it's without connections a train is easier for me.

The chauffeur sounds quite fun as an option....

No news about the car yet. Getting edgy.....

And it's not that warm in the house, Because the stupid cylinder cannot maintain heat I am turning the heating off in the hope it recovers for this evening.

Oh, and on the toothbrush sharing line of enquiry...do other couples share cutlery? Dh and I often do. Plus, if we are eating something like pasta or cereal, we will quite often share a bowl/plate too. Pasta almost always, because I don't eat much and seems a watse to put it on a plate....

End up feeding the DKs using my cutlery. I am happy to share/reuse plate if we eat at slightly different times but DW would rather get fresh - perhaps it is cos I generally do the washing up?

Weirdly, I would not reuse a plate of his but am totally happy to share one. Not sure of the logic there.

She is not really frail, just can't carry stuff. She walks every day.

She was quite happy with the coach journey but was adamant she was only going to stay with me for a few days. I offered to take her home but she said it was unfair to expect me to do two trips in one week. So she chose for me to collect her and then just take her to the coach for the trip home. I did suggest that she stays a few more days and I would then take her home but she declined.

TBH doing 150+ miles on a monday, tuesday, friday and saturday would be a lot for me, whereas I was willing to do the journey on the monday and tuesday of last week and then again this week.

I'm just really annoyed because had it all worked out, she would have done the trip more often and now she won't.

Why doesn't she want to stay long silvercar? Is there stuff she wants to see and do?

Silvercar, forgive me if I am speaking out of turn, but we found that dh's surviving grandparent was well supoorted by the jewish community when left alone. Sadly that lead them to take other liberties with things (think I have mentioned here) but most importantly the grandparent was less alone.

They are there and would be very useful if only we could get past the "I'm not old", "I don't need help" etc

We have a snow scheme here in my community. Every elderly or frail person will get a call today or tomorrow from a near neighbour to check they are OK and have food, heat and medicines. There is only a couple of inches of snow, but they will have the reassurance of knowing there is someone nearby to look out for them if they need any help. And they won't be too proud to ask as the caller will be a near neighbour who won't be put out of their way by helping. Plus there is a feedback system for any problems. :A

Well, silvercar, the most important thing is to bank this memory so your sons and their future partners feel less ...unempowered, in trying to help ypu one day when you are not old and don't need help. ;)

The simples thing would be to take old and frail out of stuff like snow schemes...mums might be finding the school run more intimidating, and those who usually walk to work might like a lift when it's freezing if someone is passing the majority of their journey.

Being part of a community of the like is the thing I miss most about being part of a church ( or much smaller village than i am now in) it's in those acts of caring and helping in a reciprocal manner IMO, that 'good' work is done.
