Having thought I had heard most things I heard another saying last night which I am not sure is too well known:
"It's not what you eat between Christmas and New Year that matters, it's what you eat between New Year and Christmas".
With refernce to what? Health and excess? Of course that's so.
A roast meal, which is all a Christmas lunch is, is not so dramatically unhealthy. There is veg, meat, and yes, of course some fat involves, but nothing too grevious so far as treats go. Even the alcohol is not too bad.
It's the days of excess of chocolate, prolongued drinking, hundreds of meals of leftover things laden in cream and sugar.....0 -
After the Pneumonia thingy I gave up smoking which was really, really hard. I took up chocolate and mrs kettles crisps in a huge way. Why is it that everything that makes us happy is bad for us?Retail is the only therapy that works0

I certainly appreciate its relevance to eating but I suppose it could be compared to most things, such as smoking, imbibing in alcolhol, exercise, drug taking etc. I suppose the opposite is also true, conducting a level of physical exertions over the festive season won't do you too much good in the longer term if you don't continue the exercise for the other 51 weeks.0 -
Hi Sparrer and welcome to the thread.
Don't worry about not being from Herts or having a Herts connection...my only connection is that my son has applied to go to Uni there.
I am also a non home owner but for some reason, found this board more to my liking than other boards on this site, even more so when the NP thread was started.
We have all sorts on this thread, for example, I am a full time carer to disabled children, never went to Uni (well apart from Open University in recent times), am fully dependant on benefits (but was once a high rate tax payer and complete workaholic)....and I am a little strange. I do appear to fit in here though, no idea why but I feel comfortable.
I do like science though!
Thank you SingleSue. Briefyl my Herts connection is having lived/worked there for several years, my DS went to a very good school there and my oldest two grandchildren now work there.
I was a home owner most of my life, a business owner for some years and a landlady (rental type, not publican). A series of occurrences see me now in retirement living in a lovely little HA property in a semi rural location where I'm more than happy. No-one knows what is ahead but we have to make the best of whatever life hands us. It certainly seems a very caring board, like my usual board it's a 'family' of very genuine people.
I admire you greatly for your strength in caring for the children. My career took me to the other end of the scale, working with the elderly and their housing needs. I'm fortunate enough to have paid into a pension scheme and have a tiny private pension which tops it up. I manage, as long as I can have my holidays I'm quite content.
I believe we're all a little strange to others. Some think they're 'normal' but I'd hate to be thought of as that!
Science - much is a little too deep for my worn-out head, my subject was English. Hundreds of years ago when I was set an essay for homework the tutor would give me a new exercise book, she knew I would fill it.
I'm new so not in a position to speak about other people's posts but I do understand how Generali came to be where he is now. It's as he says, all about choices. We may make many small right choices, sadly for some of us the wrong one can be disastrous. I wish him all the very best.0 -
Many years ago (about 20+), a friend gave me something she didn't want/use - it was a walnut cracker/opener. I was fascinated (apart from the fact it was shiny) ..... and I've still got it to this day, except it's rarely been used as I like walnuts but don't buy them.
The thing about walnuts is if you poke something sharp in the end and twist, the two halves of shell come apart easily/cleanly. It's magic.
I'd google image some for you (they're not well known) .... except my internet is too rubbish to try.... I might keep trying and if lucky will edit this post (if I can).
Edit: Found one, it was like this http://annabelchaffer.co.uk/products/dining_accessories/product_pages/silver-walnut-opener.htm - except the one I have came free with my friend's bag of walnuts so is metal, not silver0 -
PN, why don't you buy walnuts?
I bought 500 thread count sheets earlier today. A year ago I would have baulked at the cost.
I have decided not to deny myself anything I enjoy that I can afford. Apart from chocolate and mrs kettles crisps
Walnuts are definitely on my buy -at-will listRetail is the only therapy that works0 -

I eat all manner of junk, but I do like to get a good volume of junk for my calories
That's about it really.
I didn't even know sheets had threads until I came to MSE.... sheets is sheets..... more than £6 for a double and I'd not buy one. I think I've enough sheets for life, they don't really wear out.0 -
