Nice people thread part 7 - a thread in its prime

I remember in the dim and distant past of August 2011 there was a very enjoyable thread on whether we lived better than a medieval monarch. I didn’t recognise that most of the people in it were the NPs!
I hadn’t even heard of the NP thread back then ( I think it was NP 3 ). When I did first read it I thought it was about gardening as everybody was talking abougt tomatoes then too!
Welcome back, PN! You've been missed.
I'd forgotten about that one. I thought it was an interesting idea for a thread. Well remembered.
@ PN: assuming the washing machine has been delivered in working order there are only 2 places it can leak: where the water goes into the machine and where it comes out.
Where the inlet pipes have been connected by you to the taps there should be no sign of water at all. Not a drop now it's been in for a bit.
Normally if the waste water pipe has been badly connected there'll be water all over the place the first time the machine goes through any cycle other than spin only.0 -
In my perfect house ..... the machine would be outside in a separate building, along with anything else electrical.... rather than 7' from my ear and right under the gas boiler.
Did you know the household appliance most likely to catch fire is a washing machine? The final spin gets stuck and the motor overheats. Had one do that 20 years ago, good job I NEVER leave a machine running unattended!!0 -

We have a separate laundry here which is normal in Aus. There's a huge cupboard to store sheets, towels etc, space for ironing, a washing machine and dryer and there's also a sink that's about 2'x18"x2' for hand washing.
It's well away from the bedrooms.0 -
My washer ( and very un-me but life saving tumble dryer) is in a scullery/utility that nice builder built me. It has no back door yet (joiner and I are yet to agree a design but we are moving closer to a final choice I believe). But it's the warmest room in the house thanks to the tumble dryer rofl.
Pastures new, we miss you very much and I am glad to hear job etc is ok.0 -

I can't believe that years ago, we used to time the washing machine to come on during the night when we were asleep so it could use the cheaper electricity....now I can only just leave the room when it is on, let alone sleep with it on.
Oh and I would leave something charging overnight or while we were out.
Weird what a breakdown does to you but it does have its bonuses, I use less electric as nothing is left on standby, pretty much everything apart from the fridge/freezer are turned off at the plug!We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Two notable items:
[1] I am back.... still connected, able to load the page.
[2] I now have enough knickers and socks to get through the week and I didn't burn down my house
I am starting to suspect that the bad/choppy/unwatchable TV signal might be due to the aerial lead.... currently testing this hypothesis using a box to support what I feel is the weak wiring part
I know how to enjoy myself....0 -

Tv reception can be odd.
We bought a new attic arial for the kitchen and it won't get anything NBC related, while the other in house arials work fine, and channel four etc are perfect.0 -

Make sure your aerial is in good condition and pointing towards the correct transmitter. See TV aerials and connections.
That seemed to be saying that changing the transmitter your aerial is currently pointing to might fix the problem - and lists the aerials in your area. It might be, say, that your two aerials are pointing at different transmitters. Of course, it could be 101 other things.
As a renter, I've no desire to employ aerial firms to fix problems that might exist... this is one of the downsides of renting, you can't improve your lot when things are annoying as you're improving the LL's lot. Like my washing machine woes ... if I'd owned this place I'd have probably got a plumber in to rearrange the pipework.0 -
I'm definitely a "never run out of loo roll" type of hoarder. Given my own home, where I expect to stay for some time, I'd be quite happy to stock up with, say, 100 rolls if the space is available. As a rule, I like to get 24 when they're on offer and start to look for the next best offer when down to the last 4-6. As I live alone, I have to predict not only the date I might run out, but other external factors that might affect my ability to buy more. e.g. no deals, keep forgetting when in the shop, car breaks down, or even illness could potentially prevent me getting more in time (even though I am never ill as such).
I stocked up with 24 a month before I moved in here.... so doing nicely. I've got a HUGE built in cupboard in the bathroom - which is therefore only good for towels and loo rolls, but it'd hold 100 easily
Edit: I then realised I need to explain that "HUGE" means 3' wide and 1' deep, with two shelves in it. I keep forgetting that most people here are uber-posh and they might translate that into meaning something 4' square0
