Am I Richer Than King Richard I?

Ok, I don't have a castle or armies at my command but I can be in Jerusalem in half a day, my life expectancy is probably double his (he died aged 41), I have a computer in my home that can do more in a day what all the mathematicians in England could do in the C12th.

I am cleaner and probably more comfortable. I'm almost certainly in better health than he was at 40 and certainly have better access to healthcare. I have (mis)information at my fingertips thanks to 24 hour news, Fox(Sky) Sports and the Internet.

So, who is richer.

I bet he had more mistresses though... But then again he was more likely to get syphilis!

My argument is it's all relative to your era, and to your perception of wealth and status and well-being.

King Richard can issue commands or make comments and know that his fellow man/woman will listen. His physician makes sure he has the best medical attention available.

He is a respected fellow in the community.

By contrast I might be an unemployed 20 something in a Northern town which has seen better days. Yes, I have an ipod, but does that stop people looking down at me? I suspect not.

    Am I richer? Hmm...
  • You, undoubtedly.

You aren't likely to get shot attacking a castle (As Richard did, he was in perfect health up to then). You aren't going to have a hefty bloke waving pliers in your face if you have toothache.

I'd rather be any developed country citizen of now than any medieval King.

    Richard I without a doubt.

Aren't we confusing 'richer' and 'quality of life'?

Maybe. I can command resources that he could never have dreamed of though. With a couple of bulldozers and 4 men I could probably reduce a castle to ruins. I have spices in my cupboard that would cost a fortune then.

For example, I can buy a pound of ginger for less than an hour's pay. In Richard I's time it would have been possibly 18.5 year's pay (link - very interesting!)

It's about time we had a ginger ramper on here. We've had everything else;).

    True.

Tooth extraction is now likely to be less painful on the body, but more painful on the wallet.

Yes, and ginger goes well with garlic in curry dishes. I think someone did once ramp garlic, I wonder if he followed his own advice ?
